Making Museums Like Nature

In Nina Simon’s session Going Analogue we worked in groups to imagine how a museum might be transformed into something else. What something else? Well, that was up to us. Finding the answer involved completing the question: Make museums like [your idea here]. We then brainstormed concrete suggestions for how we would transform the museum into this new type of thing. Other groups filled that blank in the sentence above with a church potluck, bank, credit card, wiki and even fantasy baseball. Our group chose Nature. What did we mean by Nature?

MW2009 - The Backchannel Awards (part one)

So far, at MW2009, we've had a dizzy time keeping up with masses of really great interaction across Twitter, Flickr and this site, the conference blog. It's been just what we planned - the emergence of a new conversation space which works in different digital places and spaces.

You can be part of the Museums and the Web conversation from afar, from another session, from the floor, and from even from the platform too. There's now more ways to put your voice out here, and more ways to get feedback - and that's surely a great thing.

How do you bring 'the web' in from the outside?

Okay, so there's something trying to emerge from the discussion in a couple of the sessions I've been to: the unconference session yesterday on talking with strangers, and then the all-too-brief-and-a-little-baffling-but-interesting session with Nina Simon talking about how can museums be more like the web (I think?).

It should be noted that the unconference session and Nina's workshop were linked: the unconference topic was proposed by Jason, a grad student of Nina's in Washington. So the central premise of each discussion was more or less the same:

Funderar du på Megamenyer?

Om du svarar ja på den frågan, berätta det då för mig! Jag vill jättegärna veta mer.

Unconference session on collaboration between archives, museums and libraries

I want to thank the professionals who discussed the issues involved when trying to get archives, libraries and museums to work together. We discussed how different cultures, standards and motivations make collaborative efforts difficult. But, theme based exhibitions can help facilitate a collaboration. Furthermore, social media applications like wikis, driven by user content, can potentially be a catalyst for collaboration by passively encouraging contribution on a topic by curators, librarians and archivists.
