Conference:
MW2009
Institution:
Brooklyn Museum & Mattress Factory
Designer:
in-house: Shelley Bernstein & Jeffrey Inscho
Why:

Two museums take an innovative approach to broaden their outreach and hear directly from their visitors using no-cost existing technology in a new way. Inexpensive hardware combined with YouTube's Quick Capture feature allows visitors to record their thoughts in the galleries and then upload their responses directly to the the YouTube channel of the organization. The resulting video comment book serves as an extension of the show, by allowing the visitor voice to become an integrated component.

Brooklyn Museum:

In the Brooklyn Museum's installation, visitors were asked to share their personal experiences related to race and the impact it has had on their lives and accomplishments in response to the Brooklyn Museum exhibition, The Black List Project. With responses as varied as "What do I think of race? I'll be glad when it's no longer a category" to "This is how I feel...[sings] I feel like livin' the dream, the dream of Martin Luther the king" to visitors sharing their childhood stories.

Mattress Factory:

In the first-floor lobby of the Mattress Factory, a private, confessional-like structure has been crafted in which museum visitors are asked to broadcast their answers to the question, "What does the Mattress Factory mean to you?" Uploaded responses are as varied as the visitors making the videos. One visitor from Scottland says, "I really like that the emphasis here at the Mattress Factory is on space and community," while another visitor quips that "the Mattress Factory is the only art museum where he actually had fun"
