Why:

Create your own bird and watch it fly in the world of John James Audubon.

Vogelsxxl.nl is an educational and innovative website made for the exhibition 'Vogels van formaat' displayed in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem (NL) from 3 November 2007 to 20 January 2008. Centerpiece of this exposition was the book The Birds of America, a masterpiece written and illustrated by John James Audubon (1785-1851) in the 19th century. This book contains true size paintings of all the birds in North-America in their natural habitat. It's one of the rarest and most valuable books ever made.

On the website Vogelsxxl.nl is a lot of educational information available. Visitors can read about Audubon's life and work and about birds in general. There has also been developed a special educational program for children between 10 and 12. Teachers can download a guide and colouring pictures to organize an exhibition about birds in their own class.

To this site we added an innovative application. Just like Audubon, children can draw a bird and even make it fly! With the help of a printer, scanner and some paint or pencils, you can draw and upload your own bird. Three clicks later you can watch your own 'piece of art' fly in the world that John James Audubon painted two centuries ago!
