History of York
This UK site was launched in April 2008.
History of York does several jobs, and does each of them really well.
It's a simple idea, a way to introduce people to the wonderful but confusing history of the city. The site does this through friendly animations, interactive timelines and downloadable trails.

- play on the timeline: http://www.historyofyork.org.uk/timeline

But it was also designed with room for growth and is rapidly becoming an in-depth resource - History of York already runs to nearly 300 pages of content and is growing all the time. It includes otherwise inaccessible museum artefacts and some original research.
History of York also acts as an effective marketing tool for York and its museums, encouraging visitors to follow up their interest with real-world visits.
What's more, it has become a genuine partnership project within the city. Although History of York has a strong identity and appears to have a single anonymous author, it is actually made up of contributions from all sorts of individuals and organisations. Students, journalists, marketing executives, curators, librarians and professors have all added their bit to the online history of their city.

The fact that History of York is already very well linked on all sorts of other websites - universities, churches, Wikipedia, tourist organisations & museums - says a lot for its wide appeal.
