Francis Bacon
This interactive flash site was developed to allow users to explore the Francis Bacon exhibition at Tate Britain. It not only presents images of all the works included in the physical exhibition but also provides unprecedented access to a wide range of archival material including video and audio interviews, photographs and images from Bacon's studio, and working drawings. It is an intuitive and enjoyable tool designed to delve into the work of one of the foremost British painters of the twentieth century.
Designed in-house, using colour schemes and shapes influenced by Bacon's work, the site draws on the scholarship surrounding the exhibition, presenting academic research in an easy-to-use and digestible way. Vistors can navigate the works in the show chronologically (as they would have in the physical exhibition) or they can take their own path. They can discover for themselves the thematic links between different periods in Bacon's work, seeing him return to motifs and subject through out his long career. Pages from books and magazines, film stills and commissioned portrait photographs are placed alongside the paintings, showing Bacon's wide range of visual references, while video and audio interviews from the BBC Archives let Bacon himself tell you how he felt about some of the recurring visual elements, where some of the obsessions came from and how he approached his work.
