Description

Walking Through the Past: a walking and virtual tour of Philadelphia's downtown and beyond led by Deborah Boyer, public historian, project manager on the award-winning PhillyHistory.org project, and history guru at Azavea, a local location-based software development firm.

Grab your mobile device and your tennis shoes to go beyond the Liberty Bell and investigate how mobile technology illustrates the local history of Philadelphia's neighborhoods and people. Since 2005, the City of Philadelphia Department of Records has provided public access to the extensive photograph collections of the City Archives via PhillyHistory.org. Available as both an interactive online database and smart phone web application, PhillyHistory now includes over 90,000 historic photos and maps from five Philadelphia organizations. Winding from the seat of government at City Hall through various commercial, transportation, residential, and industrial areas, this walking tour will utilize the PhillyHistory.org smart phone web application to showcase historic photographs of the places that have influenced the city's development and demonstrate how the images relate and compare to the present-day landscape. But that’s not all! Curious about what's new in mobile technology? Provided they are ready at the time of the tour, Deb will demo the brand new NEH-funded augmented reality features added to the PhillyHistory.org mobile app.

At the end of the tour, join Deb for a cocktail reception at the office of Azavea, located just a few blocks from the the conference hotel. Meet other fellow conference attendees and discover how location-based and mapping technologies are being used in the humanities in Philadelphia and beyond.
