MULTIMEDIA SPECIALIST
Regular, Full-Time Position

SUMMARY
The Multimedia Specialist position is part of the Web Development team in the Online Engagement Group at the Exploratorium. This role is responsible for designing and developing new work and also providing on-going support for the Exploratorium's web site. The candidate should have strong visual and concept design abilities, advanced web development skills, and demonstrated proficiency with common web page markup languages. This position reports to the Production Manager of the Online Engagement Group.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work collaboratively with scientists, educators, artists, technologists, exhibit designers, media professionals, project managers, and project directors on team-based projects
  • Design and develop highly accessible online multimedia/media exhibits and resources
  • Develop creative solutions to address complex communication and information design challenges of online media
  • Experiment with and share knowledge of new technologies and best practices, yet also participate actively in general web site maintenance
  • Manage workload and assignments, meet deadlines, and participate in department and project team meetings
  • Follow department policies and practices, including documenting project processes and results with written reports, site maps, project web sites, media and project asset backup sets, and other documentation tools
  • Additional duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in conceptual design, interactive multimedia, user interface design, visual arts, or other related field, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 4 years experience developing web/mobile projects, preferably in a museum or informal education environment
  • Expert visual and interaction design skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with the full life cycle of web development, including requirements gathering, design, prototyping, coding, debugging, testing, and support
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Javascript, DOM, HTML, CSS
  • Demonstrated proficiency with common design, image processing, and production tools
  • Experience with responsive design and developing content for delivery on different computer platforms
  • Ability to create early project prototypes to demo functionality and/or inform UX
  • Working knowledge of current search engine optimization practices
  • Excellent analytical abilities
  • Willingness to take direction, work collaboratively and learn new technologies and tools

ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Development experience with Drupal, Wordpress or other content management systems
  • Experience with user centered design methods
  • Experience with dynamic data and interactive visualizations
  • Experience with XML, JSON, REST-based APIs
  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks/libraries such as jQuery
  • Experience with server-side programming languages (PHP).
  • Experience with one or more version control systems (Subversion, Git).
  • Familiarity with agile development
