Anybody have a good solution for protective cases and lanyards for iPod Touches used for in-museum, A/V tour use?

In response to your query regarding protective cases, I would like to point you to a product that we have provided to many museums and cultural institutions: http://www.paratsolutions.com/museums.

This iPod case is a durable polycarbonate "clamshell" design which provides great protection for the device. It's not bulky and rests nicely in the user's hand. It also includes a convenient neckstrap lanyard allowing visitors to comfortably carry. Best of all, the case covers the iPod Home button to helps ensure that visitors stay exclusively within your tour app and prevent users from changing device settings or using device features that may distract them from their tour.
