It was even published on the Direction of Heritage of the Generalitat (Catalan Government) website, in Catalan. I thought I could have it translated into English as well, to share it with you. As those who have proposed presentations for MW know, everything goes through extensive peer review. Once accepted, we require all our speakers to provide full papers and then we copy edit those papers and put them on-line, on CD-ROM and in print. After the meeting, we follow up by putting slides of talks on-line and providing transcripts or video of some events. The entire process, end-to-end requires a lot of attention and costs a great deal. We think it is worth it and hope you agree.

http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/dbear/how_does_conference_work_publication#comments MW2009 conference mw2009 publication transparency conferences http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/10822 Thu, 23 Apr 2009 12:07:29 +0000 dbear 10822 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com How does the conference work: Food http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/dbear/how_does_conference_work_food
The conference, like any army, marches on its belly. This year we each ate or drank $177.57 of our registration fees. That included 625 bottles of water at $4.66 each and over 2400 cups of coffee, decaf and tea from hotel urns at $4.32 each (yes, the hotel over-charges for everything). One reason we give out 'free' tickets for Starbucks espresso drinks, is that this is cheaper for us than the hotel coffee.

http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/dbear/how_does_conference_work_food#comments MW2009 catering conferences mw2009 transparency conferences http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/10820 Wed, 22 Apr 2009 18:19:50 +0000 dbear 10820 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Eval - Page 1 http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/lendif/eval_page_1
Eval - Page 1

1. in the 'web 2.0 summit' hosted by the City of Toronto, subtitled "Moving towards Government 2.0" [see the Agenda]. i hadn't heard anything about it until a tweet from Kevin Von Appen of the Ontario Science Centre mentioned he was speaking. the event offered 'on-line participation' and since i didn't have a time to head downtown i figured i'd check it out.

what i got was a lesson in how not to run an on-line event. rather than use the opportunity to model the kinds of changes in communications patterns that 'web 2.0' tech enables, the event was a one-way, an opportunity to watch 'guys in the know' talk to each other. video went out from the meeting, complete with horrible music when there was a break in the audio feed. "questions" could be submitted through an 'ask a question' form, but they turned out to be highly moderated. [there was no mention of moderation anywhere in the prep materials.] there was a link to 'view the moderators board', but from my experience a lot of what was asked never made it there. at one point it disappeared completely for me. there was also a form to enter 'comments'. where they went was anyone's guess. i couldn't find any trace of what i submitted, anywhere [though tech support did tell me the went 'into the same database as everything else'. how reassuring.]

http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/how_not_encourage_web_participation_conference#comments conference online participation to20 web conference webcast conferences toronto http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/10410 Wed, 26 Nov 2008 23:52:20 +0000 jtrant 10410 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com tagging and folksonomy keynote @ DC2008 http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/tagging_and_folksonomy_keynote_dc2008
i gave a keynote this morning at the Dublin Core Metadata Meeting - DC2008 on access to art museums on-line: a role for social tagging and folksonomy? that reports on more of the steve.museum tagging data analysis. this talk built on what i reported at NKOS last week [steve.museum: public and professional vocabularies. presentation @ NKOS 2008] and extended it to include some thoughts on user-generated metadata – useful in the context of DC, which began its life as a format for encoding user-created metadata – and a bit of work about the relationships between tags and search logs.

my slides are here (without some of the funky builds).

while we'd hypothesized that there might be a tight relationship between tags and search terms, what we found was a much looser coupling. whether this is a self-fulilling prophesy – because searches on the kinds of subject and genre terms that they use to tag fail, people don't use them – or because description and retrieval vocabularies vary at some other level still needs some thought. that's what the examples we looked at seemed to indicate, and a place i'll be looking further.

http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/jtrant/tagging_and_folksonomy_keynote_dc2008#comments Art Museums dc2008 folksonomy keynote paper presentation steve.museum tagging conferences folksonomy research http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/10292 Tue, 23 Sep 2008 12:39:58 +0000 jtrant 10292 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Houston… We have a wiki workshop http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/blog/ngamble/houston%E2%80%A6_we_have_wiki_workshop
I flew into Houston, Texas yesterday for the 21st Annual Visitor Studies Association conference.
