The actual structure of these collaborations can take many forms. This report outlines approaches to engaging with outside talent on three levels of commitment<strong> </strong>(Casual Contribution, Mentored Development, and Expert Networks) as may be required for different projects. Categories of methods for open innovation can be applied to create a manageable structure for the contributions<strong> </strong>(Orchestra, Creative Bazaar, Jam Session, and Mod Station models). A range of<strong> </strong>stages of completion,<strong> </strong>from ideas to completed content, can be expected from such collaboration efforts. My current project is an attempt to test out some of the ideas from this session in real space and real time at my museum.&nbsp; &nbsp;<em>ArtGameLab</em> is an interactive exhibition of crowd-sourced game prototypes, displayed and distributed in SFMOMA’s Koret Visitor Education Center.&nbsp; My aim in proposing this paper is to report back on this experiment, using the key principles from my unconference session as measures of the project: What does it mean to be “low cost?” And “low stakes?” How did this project succeed (and fail) in overcoming institutional barriers to experimentation? How can we use games to engage visitors, and how can we measure their engagement?</p> <p>Several months ago, we sent an open call out to Bay Area game designers, experience designers and conceptual artists.&nbsp; We asked for inventive but low-cost ideas for games SFMOMA’s visitors can play in the galleries and other public spaces of the museum. &nbsp;I received about 50 proposals from community members from a multitude of disciplines and with wide-ranging levels of experience. The proposals varied from the highly-technological to the determinedly-analog, from the absolutely-feasible to the absurdly-farfetched.&nbsp; I am currently collaborating with the artists and designers who submitted the strongest and simplest game ideas to develop: prototypes, proposals for thought-provoking games that cannot be executed, and engaging public programs.</p> <p>Starting in January 2012, the museum will display this selection of crowd-sourced games onsite, and provide a list of all SFMOMA-based game resources online at sfmoma.org/artgamelab (url not yet active).&nbsp; The exhibition will include hands-on activities, opportunities for discussion, and avenues for critical thought about gaming in museums.&nbsp; Programs around the exhibition will include a panel discussion on the topic, regular “SFMOMA’s Got Game” meet-ups for community members who want to play together, and opportunities for visitors to invent their own games.&nbsp;</p> <p>The primary goal of this exhibition is to engage SFMOMA’s community in employing vocabularies of game play to test out strategies for visitor engagement.&nbsp; Like a game, I am setting up the parameters but have no idea at this point what the exact substance or outcome will be.&nbsp; This is wholly an experiment, and I wish to share my findings – both successes and failures – with my colleagues in the field at the upcoming Museums and the Web.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Mini-Workshop - teaches something or explores approaches </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/sessions/mini_workshop_on_sfmoma_s_art_game_laborator">Mini-Workshop on SFMOMA’s Art Game Laboratory: Real-Life Mad Science Experiments in Visitor Engagement </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.sfmoma.org/artgamelab" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.sfmoma.org/artgamelab</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/egangsei" class="username" title="View Erica&#039;s profile.">Erica Gangsei</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/sfmoma_s_art_game_laboratory_real_life_mad_s#comments MW2012 analog/digital audience interaction community crowdsourcing games prototyping http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15255 Sat, 01 Oct 2011 01:41:13 +0000 egangsei 15255 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Open Innovation and Open Source: A Guide for Content Developers http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/open_innovation_and_open_source_a_guide_for_ <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2012 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-program-paper-backref"> <div class="field-label">Published Paper:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/papers/open_innovation_and_open_source_a_guide_for_co">Open Innovation and Open Source: A Guide for Content Developers </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> participation </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> co-creation </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> design </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> prototyping </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> collaboration </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> open source </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Tech Open Source museum project launched in late 2007 (as "The<br />Tech Virtual") with the goal to apply the latest in open source<br />collaboration methods and tools to the creation of museum content. It<br />is composed of an online platform (a website with user-generated<br />content) and modeling resources hosted in a 3D virtual world. Offered<br />as a resource for the museum community as a whole, the project was<br />funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and is hosted by The<br />Tech Museum in San Jose, CA.</p> <p>The ambitions of the program include development of museum exhibits<br />and content through open contribution by a diverse community of<br />curators, experts, hobbyists, scientists, and thinkers. This is<br />accomplished by connecting with individuals, institutions, and online<br />communities internationally. Thus far the project has involved the<br />participation of over 20 institutions and 1300 site members, who have<br />generated more than 400 exhibit designs and video projects.</p> <p>As part of the grant products we will present a report of these<br />methods for the museum industry in the form of a project white paper<br />at Museums and the Web 2012.</p> <p>The paper includes descriptions of the methods in use and results<br />obtained by the project. These are summarized in a practical structure<br />which covers open source approaches for Casual Contribution, Mentored<br />Development, or Expert Network level contributors. It also explains<br />how to apply a range of open innovation categories to structure open<br />source projects.</p> <p>The paper is meant as a guide for institutions considering open<br />innovation programs or open design projects.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/sessions/optimizing_engagement">Optimizing engagement</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://thetechopensource.thetech.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://thetechopensource.thetech.org/</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/bobk" class="username" title="View Bob&#039;s profile.">Bob Ketner</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/open_innovation_and_open_source_a_guide_for_#comments MW2012 co-creation collaboration design open source participation prototyping http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15228 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 19:27:36 +0000 bobk 15228 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Design and Development of a Collections Dashboard http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/design_and_development_of_a_collections_dashboard <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/12">Twidale, M.</a>, <a href="/biblio/author/13">Urban R.</a>, &amp; <a href="/biblio/author/1662">Adamczyk P.</a></span> (2010).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/design_and_development_of_a_collections_dashboard">Design and Development of a Collections Dashboard</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1929">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web 2010.
