What is the best way to leverage electronic media and social networks to engage new museum audiences? When should we invest in a new online collection or a new website?&nbsp; These questions and many more plague museum technology professionals who are struggling to justify the investments in technology and staff that leverage these tools for the best purposes of the museum. The creation of Digital Strategy documents for museums seems to be a common approach to addressing these concerns, attempting to insert thoughtful planning and strategic thinking about technology into the conversation at a senior management level. While it’s hard to argue with the logic of developing a step-by-step plan for technology investment, is it possible that by ghettoizing technology strategy to a realm apart from the larger strategy of the museum, we will only succeed in highlighting the perceived gaps that exist between technology issues and those of real importance and permanence for the future of museums?</p> <p class="keywords">Keywords: digital strategy, technology strategy, museum administration, professional development, mission, strategic planning, metrics</p> <p></p><div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-paper-program-ref"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Program Item Reference:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/mw2012/programs/blow_up_your_digital_strategy_changing_the_c">Blow Up Your Digital Strategy: Changing the Conversation about Museums and Technology</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/papers/blow_up_your_digital_strategy_changing_the_c_1" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/papers/blow_up_your_digital_strategy_changing_the_c_1#comments MW2012 digital strategy metrics mission museum administration professional development strategic planning technology strategy http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/16730 Sat, 10 Mar 2012 19:30:24 +0000 rjstein 16730 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com First Impressions http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/first_impressions <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> professional development </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> change </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> job market </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> employment </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> institutional culture </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We will bring together museum technology professionals who have made a job change since the MW community last gathered in April 2010. In a lively roundtable discussion, the group will offer first impressions of their new posts; consider how leaving one job and starting another may have influenced their thinking about their former positions; and discuss the different ways in which technology, change, innovation, and collaboration are approached in their past and present worlds. Participants will offer their thoughts on the interview and hiring process and examine the ways in which it forced them to characterize and communicate their talents, skills, history, goals, and outlooks. Though the session will provide a fun peek at the experiences of friends and colleagues, it should also serve as a serious meditation on the nature of change in a fast-evolving job market and offer several useful case studies by peers who have recently chosen to pursue a new challenge.</p> <p>Susan Chun will serve as session moderator; participants include Bruce Wyman (currently Director of Creative Development, Second Story Interactive Studios); Christina DePaolo (currently Director of New Media, Balboa Park Online Collaborative); Koven Smith (currently Director of Technology, Denver Art Museum); others are welcome to contribute.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Other Interaction - describe in notes </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/interaction/interaction_thoughts_on_a_encountering_a_">Interaction – Thoughts on Encountering a New Organization</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/schun" class="username" title="View Susan&#039;s profile.">Susan Chun</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/bwyman" class="username" title="View Bruce&#039;s profile.">Bruce Wyman</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/christinad" class="username" title="View Christina&#039;s profile.">Christina DePaolo</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/koven_smith" class="username" title="View Koven&#039;s profile.">Koven Smith</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/first_impressions#comments MW2011 change employment institutional culture job market professional development http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12488 Fri, 01 Oct 2010 02:53:07 +0000 bwyman 12488 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Learning by Design: Teachers / Museums / Technology http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/learning_design_teachers_museums_technology <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/526">Trofanenko, B.</a>, &amp; <a href="/biblio/author/544">Korteweg L.</a></span> (2002).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/learning_design_teachers_museums_technology">Learning by Design: Teachers / Museums / Technology</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="14"><a href="/biblio/author/1661">David Bearman</a></span>, <span id="14"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web 2002: Proceedings. </u> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&amp;rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Fconference.archimuse.com&amp;rft.title=Learning+by+Design%3A+Teachers+%2F+Museums+%2F+Technology&amp;rft.date=2002&amp;rft.aulast=Trofanenko&amp;rft.aufirst=Brenda&amp;rft.au=Korteweg%2C+Lisa&amp;rft.pub=Archives+%26+Museum+Informatics&amp;rft.place=Boston%2C+Massachusetts%2C+USA&amp;rft_id=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archimuse.com%2Fmw2002%2Fpapers%2Fkorteweg%2Fkorteweg.html"></span><div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/learning_design_teachers_museums_technology#comments MW2002 collaboration interactivity museum education professional development mw2002 http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/8419 Wed, 02 May 2007 01:00:34 +0000 jtrant 8419 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com
