It would describe:</p> <p>(i)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The nine-year project to create a comprehensive photographic record of all oil paintings in public ownership across the United Kingdom that will reach its conclusion at the end of 2012. By that date the project will have catalogued approximately 200,000 paintings from around 3,000 collections including not only those in museums but also works in universities, hospitals, fire stations and other public buildings. The largest of these collections is the National Trust with over 12,000 oil paintings. At the other end of the scale are many collections that hold just one painting. In between lie famous collections such as Tate and the National Gallery and a massive core of unsung local authority museums.</p> <p>(ii)&nbsp; The project to build and then run the Your Paintings website including reference to the audience research that preceded the build, the engagement of stakeholders, the programmes to reach wider audiences, how we are connecting broadcast BBC arts programmes to the Your Paintings website and the measures of success that are being used to track project progress.</p> <p>(iii)The Your Paintings Tagger crowdsourcing project at <a href="http://tagger.thepcf.org.uk/">http://tagger.thepcf.org.uk/</a></p> <p>which is creating enhanced meta data for the Your Paintings website using a methodology used in the classification of galaxies by the Citizen Science Alliance (the Galaxy Zoo project). This interface was built for the PCF by its supplier Keepthinking with Art Historical input provided to the project by the University of Glasgow. This meta data will allow users of the Your Paintings website to search for specific subject matter and styles and movements in paintings.</p> <p>(iv)&nbsp; The plans to make Your Paintings data and images available to collections (and possibly others), through an API and other data sharing web services, thereby unlocking new value. The challenges addressed will include rights issues and technical barriers.</p> <p>(v)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The plans to create an online network of <em>pro bono</em> oil paintings expertise for participating collections to refer to in partnership with leading UK collections and the University of Glasgow. Since then, video has become a powerful educational tool for both students and informal learners. In addition, Web 2.0 and RSS have led to the disaggregation of materials - things that were once bundled together are now offered piecemeal (think: songs on iTunes instead of whole albums). &nbsp; Also, since everyone can now publish to the web, teachers are confronted with a wealth of resources for learning materials and lesson plans (Lesson Planet, TeachersPayTeachers.com, etc.). </span> <p><span>In light of these developments, in 2010, the education department began a process of rethinking the content and structure of our teacher resources. We imagined re-purposing the teacher materials to make them useful for informal learners, disaggregating them, and combining them with other, existing resources on MoMA.org. Lastly, we imagined a site that was not segregated within the education section of the website. &nbsp; We began by surveying the existing research and did two days of action research with both teachers and informal learners to try out our ideas.</span></p> <p><span>In the Fall of 2010, we created a pilot site (<a href="http://education.moma.org/moma/learningresources/" title="http://education.moma.org/moma/learningresources/">http://education.moma.org/moma/learningresources/</a>) in response to our findings. We used Haiku, the Learning Management System we use for delivering our online courses. The site, on Abstract Expressionism, re-purposed materials from an existing teacher guide, from the </span><span>Abstract Expressionist New York</span><span> exhibition sub-site (moma.org/abex), and from the in-gallery experience of the exhibition (audio-tours). However, it also incorporated new materials designed specifically for teachers, including slideshows, Powerpoints, worksheets, teaching tips, and discussion questions as well as existing content from Modern Teacher Online. </span></p> <p><span>Our demonstration at Museums and the Web will include both the results of our research and the pilot site that we built in response to our findings.</span></p></div> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/demonstrations/demonstrations_iii">Demonstrations III</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://education.moma.org/moma/learningresources" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://education.moma.org/moma/learningresources</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/bethrharris" class="username" title="View Beth&#039;s profile.">Beth Harris</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/lisamazzola" class="username" title="View Lisa&#039;s profile.">Lisa Mazzola</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/colleen_brogan" class="username" title="View Colleen&#039;s profile.">Colleen Brogan</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/evaluating_modern_teachers_online_and_moma_s#comments MW2011 education education learning resources teachers http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/13202 Thu, 30 Dec 2010 22:43:55 +0000 bethrharris 13202 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com
