Those who face operational and budget limitations may find practical advice in this narrative, which will present publishing platforms and useful online tools for organizing and running an in-house publication. &nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Rachel Craft will approach the subject from the perspective of developing a digital publishing process that builds off of existing structures. The IMA is seeking to reorient its publication strategy and will be exploring how auxiliary stories and multimedia can be developed around existing catalogue content to enrich the digital reading experience. Proposed projects range from revisiting past publications to envisioning online-only editions of future scholarly catalogues. &nbsp;How can an organization create publications with substantial and purposeful interactive elements while avoiding the pitfalls of creating a “bells and whistles” effect?&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>This paper will also survey content approaches being explored by other organizations, both inside and outside of museums, and how these methods can inform and inspire our own work.&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition, a range of self-publishing tools will be presented that organizations can utilize to embark on their own digital publishing projects.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/sessions/after_gutenberg">After Gutenberg</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://whitney.org/whitneystories" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://whitney.org/whitneystories</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/sarahhromack" class="username" title="View Sarah&#039;s profile.">Sarah Hromack</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/rachelgcraft" class="username" title="View Rachel&#039;s profile.">Rachel Craft</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/from_the_ground_up_or_the_inside_out_new_app#comments MW2012 blogs content strategy Digital Publishing DIY multimedia Multimedia http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15238 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 21:22:33 +0000 SarahHromack 15238 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Integration of Print and Digital Publishing Workflows http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/integration_of_print_and_digital_publishing_ <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-program-paper-backref"> <div class="field-label">Published Paper:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/papers/integration_of_print_and_digital_publishing_wo">Integration of Print and Digital Publishing Workflows at the Art Institute of Chicago</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> Digital Publishing </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> Digital publishing economics </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> challenges </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> case studies </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> museum publications </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> economics </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Art Institute of Chicago has been publishing award-winning scholarly and popular print catalogues for decades… but is this model sustainable?
