No password required, but cleverly blocks access to e-mail, youtube, and any other internet distractions.</p> <p>2 - custom "hint &amp; search" in the Application Store to help the visitor browse and find the right application.</p> <p>3 - local pre-downloading of the app. It saves the network bandwidth and deliver app at lightspeed (around five times faster than traditionnal Wi-Fi hotspots -&gt; e.g. : 170 Mo in 60 seconds).</p> <p>4 - valuable usage data collection that can be shared with the museum, to help them optimise app or exhibit design.</p> <p>Our system is live in France on major sites : the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Palais, the Pinacothèque de Paris, the Chateau de Chantilly and many more. Securing cross-departmental stakeholder investment and ensuring alignment with the institution’s core mission have been key for National Museums Scotland and National Museum Wales in developing a framework for their mobile programme. This paper will explain how these organisations sought to overcome organisational challenges from the outset; pushing forward ideas and taking a common approach to planning mobile projects that can be adopted by other institutions.</p> <p>National Museums Scotland and National Museum Wales have many similarities in their structure and set-up. Both operate a main base out of their respective capital cities (Edinburgh and Cardiff) and have a mix of specialist rural and urban-based museums. Since 2009 the proportion of online visitors from mobile devices has increased significantly for both organisations; taking this on board alongside in-gallery research and predicted market trends, both have begun developing a programme of mobile interpretation using the same user-focused approach.</p> <p>For the National Museum Wales this is about making information accessible, as well as creating a link between historic buildings and collections in a rural setting at the National History Museum at St Fagans. For National Museums Scotland it’s about bringing new interpretation and innovation to the recently-reopened National Museum of Scotland. Importantly, neither approach has focused on technology in the first instance - workshop sessions have concentrated on getting the right people to take a balanced view of audience needs and create design briefs that tie closely to each organisation’s strategic objectives.</p> <p>Both projects have their specific challenges and the session will explore what led them to take certain decisions, what the outcomes have been to date, the broader implications for developing mobile products in terms of cost and impact on the museum technical infrastructure, and the lessons they feel will benefit other museums looking to develop their own plans.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/sessions/optimizing_engagement">Optimizing engagement</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/hughw" class="username" title="View Hugh&#039;s profile.">Hugh Wallace</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/dafjames" class="username" title="View Dafydd&#039;s profile.">Dafydd James</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/loic_tallon" class="username" title="View Loic&#039;s profile.">Loic Tallon</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/delivering_mobile_from_the_ground_up_explori#comments MW2012 access digital evaluation framework interpretation mobile http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15208 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 15:29:16 +0000 hughw 15208 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Museum Commons: Tragedy or Enlightened self-interest? http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/museum_commons_tragedy_or_enlightened_self_interest <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/69">Edson, M.</a>, &amp; <a href="/biblio/author/1763">Cherry R.</a></span> (2010).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/museum_commons_tragedy_or_enlightened_self_interest">Museum Commons: Tragedy or Enlightened self-interest?</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1929">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web 2010. In this demo, we show how museum collections can be accessed by users based on historical events.</p> <p>We have enriched the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision with information about the events that are depicted in or related to the object (for details on that, see our MW2011 abstract). The event information provides us with meta-data about participants, dates, locations and event types, which can all be used to browse collections in a more context-driven way than unstructured collection meta-data can provide.</p> <p>Not all meta-data elements are to be treated equally. In the demonstrator, alongside each object we show the object information along four dimensions: biography, material, semiotics and associated events. The biographical and materiality dimensions contain the information on the object as present in most collection databases, e.g., creator, time period, type of work, technique. The semiotic and event dimensions are the novel collection access dimensions added by Agora. For expert users, such as historians, the combination of the four dimensions provides finegrained access to collection objects that allows them to gain a deeper understanding of the provenance of the object. The interface also allows them to discover related objects in the collection along any of the dimensions in a fast and automated way, which was previously a time-consuming manual process. For lay users, such as secondary school students, the event-driven browser can help educate them about the way objects in museum collections are related, and illustrate multiple facets of historical events as expressed through the objects. Whenever the user wants to know more about an event, she can bring up information about the event that is automatically linked to the objects from external sources. These types of automatic enrichment provide museum collections with more grounding in history than they were previously unable to provide on a large scale. The event information provides users a handle to the history behind the object. It also provides yet another exploration path of the collection, as other objects that are also related to this event can be accessed directly.</p> <p>Finally, the event browser keeps track of the objects viewed during a session and how the user went from one object to the other (i.e., through which dimension the user browsed). This navigation history forms the personal context to the objects the user viewed, creating a personal narrative that can be shared by users and will be studied by (art)historians to investigate the meaning of historical narrative in the modern Web-based collection access.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/demonstrations/demonstrations_iv">Demonstrations IV</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://agora.cs.vu.nl/eventdemo" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://agora.cs.vu.nl/eventdemo</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/lourens" class="username" title="View Lourens&#039;s profile.">Lourens van der Meij</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/mvanerp" class="username" title="View Marieke&#039;s profile.">Marieke van Erp</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/laroyo" class="username" title="View Lora&#039;s profile.">Lora Aroyo</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/roxanesegers" class="username" title="View Roxane&#039;s profile.">Roxane Segers</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/event_driven_access_to_heterogeneous_distrib#comments MW2011 access art history browsing data integration events resource discovery http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/13212 Fri, 31 Dec 2010 17:45:31 +0000 MvanErp 13212 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Optical Media: Their Implications for Archives & Museums http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/optical_media_their_implications_archives_museums <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/1661">Bearman, D.</a></span> (1987).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/optical_media_their_implications_archives_museums">Optical Media: Their Implications for Archives &amp;
