Have we formed more meaningful relationships with our community and in the process, are we better serving the missions of our institutions? Could the future of our digital outreach be primarily based on social engagement and if so, are our organizations adapting rapidly enough to be prepared for this social future? Are our current social media practices engaging online communities to their greatest potential, or are we missing out on crowdsourcing, collaboratively learning, or other as-yet undiscovered social experiences? How can we better evaluate the success of our efforts and take our social media engagement to the next level?</p> <p>This extended professional forum will use a range of social media platforms to engage museum professionals attending Museums and the Web and beyond in this discussion. This social media event component will begin before the meeting in San Diego 11-14 April using a wiki and other social media platforms, and the conversation about what we really know about social media, museum content, and cultural institution audiences will surely continue long afterwards as well. The aim is to engage fellow practitioners in defining the myths and assumptions we most want to “bust,” and to gather data in order to formulate testable hypotheses for this provocative discussion, culminating in a special professional forum at the MW2012 conference.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Professional Forum - discuss an issue </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/sessions/professional_forum_on_what_do_we_really_know">Professional Forum on &quot;What do we really know about social media in museums?&quot;</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://si.edu/Connect" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://si.edu/Connect</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/efrankle" class="username" title="View Elissa&#039;s profile.">Elissa Frankle</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/goodlanderg" class="username" title="View Georgina&#039;s profile.">Georgina Goodlander</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/victoria_portway" class="username" title="View Victoria&#039;s profile.">Victoria Portway</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/jeff_gates" class="username" title="View Jeff&#039;s profile.">Jeff Gates</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/darrenmilligan" class="username" title="View Darren&#039;s profile.">Darren Milligan</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/balpert" class="username" title="View Brian&#039;s profile.">Brian Alpert</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/erin_blasco" class="username" title="View Erin Marie&#039;s profile.">Erin Marie Blasco</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/sarah_banks" class="username" title="View Sarah&#039;s profile.">Sarah Banks</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/dklevan" class="username" title="View David&#039;s profile.">David Klevan</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/awong22" class="username" title="View Amelia&#039;s profile.">Amelia Wong</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/what_do_we_really_know_about_social_media_in#comments MW2012 best practices evaluation Facebook metrics social media twitter http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15240 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 21:32:10 +0000 danaallengreil 15240 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com One-to-one: supporting artist-visitor dialogue http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/one_to_one_supporting_artist_visitor_dialogu <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-program-paper-backref"> <div class="field-label">Published Paper:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/papers/one_to_one_supporting_artist_visitor_dialogue">One-to-one: supporting artist-visitor dialogue</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> kiosk </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> website </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> dialogue </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> video </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> artist </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> twitter </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Artists have been using the Internet since the early days of the Web, but no-one has done anything quite like Chinese artist Ai Weiwei who uses technology, Twitter in particular, as a way of sharing his artistic and political life with people all around the world.&nbsp;</p> <p>Alongside his Unilever Series installation at Tate Modern, which opens October 12th 2010, the Turbine Hall has also been transformed into a hub of global conversation. Here, next to the artwork, a series of booths have been installed where the artist asks visitors to record a video, either asking him a question or answering one of his questions. These videos are then published on a dedicated website for all to see and to also engage those not able to visit in person. Each week until May 2011, Ai Weiwei is selecting videos to respond to and posting his video or text responses on the website, thus creating a joyful, worldwide dialogue between the artist and the visitors. People outside the museum can also join in the conversation via Twitter. Ai Weiwei will be monitoring and replying to postings with the hashtag #tateaww.</p> <p>In this paper, we will describe in detail the principles, philosophy and technology behind the <em>One-to-One with the artist </em>project. Recent advances in the technology made it possible to realize the project’s ambitions in under eight weeks. We will also report on the effective usage of the kiosks and website by both the visitors and the artist, the challenges encountered in the development and implementation process, as well as the results of the evaluation that will be carried out in the upcoming months.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/user_generated_community">User-Generated Community</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/silviaf" class="username" title="View Silvia&#039;s profile.">Silvia Filippini Fantoni</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/kirstieb" class="username" title="View Kirstie&#039;s profile.">Kirstie Beaven</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/benr" class="username" title="View Ben&#039;s profile.">Ben Rubinstein</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/one_to_one_supporting_artist_visitor_dialogu#comments MW2011 artist dialogue kiosk twitter video website http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12424 Thu, 30 Sep 2010 17:40:05 +0000 silviaf 12424 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Can Twitter Save Bletchley Park? http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/can_twitter_save_bletchley_park <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/1954">Black, S.</a>, <a href="/biblio/author/24">Bowen J.</a>, &amp; <a href="/biblio/author/1955">Griffin K.</a></span> (2010).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/can_twitter_save_bletchley_park">Can Twitter Save Bletchley Park?</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1929">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web. </u> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&amp;rft.title=Can+Twitter+Save+Bletchley+Park%3F&amp;rft.date=2010&amp;rft.aulast=Black&amp;rft.aufirst=Sue&amp;rft.pub=Archives+%26amp%3B+Museum+Informatics&amp;rft.place=Denver%2C+Colorado%2C+USA"></span><div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/can_twitter_save_bletchley_park#comments MW MW2010 blogging fundraising heritage social media twitter United Kingdom virtual community Web 2.0 http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12103 Wed, 14 Apr 2010 22:10:43 +0000 biblio 12103 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Clearing the Path for Sisyphus: How Social Media is Changing Our Jobs and Our Working Relationships http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/clearing_path_sisyphus_how_social_media_changing_our_ <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/42">Gates, J.</a></span> (2010).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/clearing_path_sisyphus_how_social_media_changing_our_">Clearing the Path for Sisyphus: How Social Media is Changing Our Jobs and Our Working Relationships</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1929">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web. </u> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&amp;rft.title=Clearing+the+Path+for+Sisyphus%3A+How+Social+Media+is+Changing+Our+Jobs+and+Our+Working+Relationships&amp;rft.date=2010&amp;rft.aulast=Gates&amp;rft.aufirst=Jeff&amp;rft.pub=Archives+%26amp%3B+Museum+Informatics&amp;rft.place=Denver%2C+Colorado%2C+USA"></span><div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/clearing_path_sisyphus_how_social_media_changing_our_#comments MW MW2010 conversation dialogue new media on-line twitter http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12104 Wed, 14 Apr 2010 22:10:43 +0000 biblio 12104 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Where Do We Go From Here?: Continuing with Web 2.0 http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/where_do_we_go_here_continuing_web_20 <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/40">Bernstein, S.</a></span> (2008).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/where_do_we_go_here_continuing_web_20">Where Do We Go From Here?: Continuing with Web 2.0</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="14"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="14"><a href="/biblio/author/1929">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web 2008.
