Using captains’ logs, passenger diaries, letters, and other original source material, the <em>Bound for South Australia</em> blog retraced—through weekly real-time updates—the journeys made by nine vessels from England to Australia between February and December 1836. &nbsp;Over ten months, website visitors, email subscribers, and social media followers were able to relive and engage with the unfolding story of the first 500 settlers as they made their way to an unknown land across the globe. The<em> Bound for South Australia</em> experiment demonstrates the possibilities of history to engage and connect communities using contemporary web technologies. It explores blogging as a narrative form and shows how the retelling of historical events can create and sustain communities of interest and identity.</p> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-paper-program-ref"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Program Item Reference:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/mw2012/programs/cancelled_blogging_the_past_recreating_histo">CANCELLED Blogging the past: Recreating history and creating community with Bound for South Australia 1836</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/papers/blogging_the_past_recreating_history_and_creat" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/papers/blogging_the_past_recreating_history_and_creat#comments MW2012 blog curriculum history narrative schools social http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/16872 Thu, 29 Mar 2012 05:10:21 +0000 dpeacock 16872 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Social Memory Technology http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/social_memory_technology <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2012 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> social </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> technology </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> memory </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> life stories </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="Default">Every human being, whether anonymous or famous, has the right to immortalize his or her story and integrate it into social memory. That idea gave rise to the Museum of the Person – a virtual museum that connects people and groups through their stories. Founded in Brazil, in 1991, the Museum of the Person is now an international network with initiatives in Portugal, the USA and Canada.</p> <p class="Default">Since its creation, the Museum of the Person has been a civil society organization working to record, preserve and transform into information the life stories of each and every person in society. Using its own methodology, it captures, organizes and edits contents that are later disseminated through publications, radio and TV programs, exhibitions, studies and at the portal <a href="http://www.museudapessoa.net/">www.museudapessoa.net</a>.</p> <p class="Default">With programs in the areas of memory, education, communication and community development, the Museum of the Person has conducted about 200 memory projects aimed at multiplying and democratizing its methodology and its collection, which includes 14 thousand life stories and 72 thousand images and documents.</p> <p class="Default">The methodology was developed with the influence of micro and behavioral history. The Museum of the Person makes use of the social technology of memory, which encourages communities, civil society organizations and companies from different locations, profiles and trajectories, to build, socialize and organize their stories, highlighting the experiences and knowledge of people. This is a technology that can be applied on a large scale, cost-effective, generating social development and diminishing conflicts. One of its uses is to engage the public in the process of strengthening the democracy in Brazil and others countries.</p> <p class="Default">That is our aim, to make our society a more democratic and fair one, where people who would normally be “invisible”, have the chance to be included and respected as history makers as we all are.</p> <p>In view of the storing of Social Memory Technology, this practice was discussed, deepened and systematized by a multidisciplinary team at the Museum of the Person. We seek to systematize how groups, organizations and communities can undertake projects of memory and take ownership of their history.</p> <p>History is never absolute and is not ready. The making of history is an ongoing live process, which concerns us all. It is impossible to imagine life without history. Without it, we would not know who we are and whither we go. More than remembering what was experienced, the historical narrative conveys values and worldviews and helps to understand what we have today and where we go.</p> <p>We hope that with the experience we manage will inspire other organizations and find new partners that are interested in the Social Memory Technology and the innovative actions developed by the Museum of the Person.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/demonstrations/mw2012_demonstrations_ii_0">MW2012 Demonstrations II</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.museudapessoa.net" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.museudapessoa.net</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/museu_da_pessoa" class="username" title="View Cássio&#039;s profile.">Cássio Carvalho</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/social_memory_technology#comments MW2012 life stories memory social technology http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15217 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 16:51:25 +0000 museu da pessoa 15217 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com KuratorTool http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/kuratortool <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/2015">Overgaard, M.</a>, &amp; <a href="/biblio/author/2016">Svensson P.</a></span> (2010).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/kuratortool">KuratorTool</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="2"><a href="/biblio/author/1929">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>Museums and the Web 2010. We have observed visitors glossing through exhibits lacking the capacity to make meaning from art viewing. A social mobile application that we have created and tested helps novice visitors to actively engage with works of art, develop their vocabulary, and enhance their art-viewing skills. Supporting novice users in building art-viewing capacity is essential for making a lasting impact on visitors and encouraging life-long learning in the arts.</p> <p>This paper presents the design, development, and evaluation of Art-e-Muse, a social mobile application that helps novice viewers develop the skills needed to actively engage with works of art. Art-e-Muse has been developed and tested in the Davis Museum and Cultural Center, an academic fine-arts museum on the Wellesley College campus. Through the deployment of Art-e-Muse we investigate how the use of mobile human-computer interaction paired with social networking can offer advantages for museums seeking to redefine the museum experience for novice visitors.</p> <p>Art-e-Muse was designed using a participatory design methodology and is implemented as an iPod Touch and iPhone application utilizing the Facebook Connect API. During the period of May through July 2010, we conducted a series of workshops with museum staff, students, and faculty. As a result, we set three goals for Art-e-Muse: 1) fostering engagement with works of art, 2) promoting dialogue about art between members of a community, and 3) encouraging repeat visits to the museum. To accomplish these goals, Art-e-Muse diverges from the traditional museum guide approach in which experts provide information for visitors to consume. Interaction with Art-e-Muse is initiated when visitors use the device camera to scan a two-dimensional code placed next to a work of art. Art-e-Muse then presents users with a series of prompts that serve to create an interactive and reflective experience. Prompts are short and specific for each work of art. Prompts may include questions that encourage deep looking, anecdotal facts, and brief exercises requiring users to consider narrative, style, artists’ intent, and technique. A game mechanic rewards users with coins from the museum collection when certain milestones are accomplished. To create a sense of social presence and foster a dialogue, the application allows users to share insights, responses and accomplishments with their friends on Facebook.&nbsp; The game mechanic leads to deep engagement and encourages users to make return visits to the museum.</p> <p>The system was preliminary evaluated during August 2010. Findings indicate that novice users were engaged with works of arts, spending a significant amount of time with each work. Users were eager to use Art-e-Muse and expressed their satisfaction learning new ways to think of works of art both from the prompts and from others’ responses. Following this evaluation, we deployed Art-e-Muse in a permanent collection gallery and are currently evaluating its use. Our methodology includes direct observation, data collection through system logging, surveys, and in-depth interviews.</p> <p>This paper will describe the design, technical development, and results from the evaluation of Art-e-Muse.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Paper - in formal session </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/session/mobile_parade">Mobile Parade</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.davismuseum.wellesley.edu/collections/index.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.davismuseum.wellesley.edu/collections/index.html</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/oshaer" class="username" title="View Orit&#039;s profile.">Orit Shaer</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/jolson" class="username" title="View Jim&#039;s profile.">Jim Olson</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/medwards" class="username" title="View MaCherie&#039;s profile.">MaCherie Edwards</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/cvaldes" class="username" title="View Consuelo&#039;s profile.">Consuelo Valdes</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/art_app_reciation_fostering_engagement_and_r#comments MW2011 collection human-computer interaction iphone iTouch mobile mobile phones social http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/12449 Thu, 30 Sep 2010 20:10:38 +0000 oshaer 12449 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Heritage 2.0 http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/heritage_2_0 <span class="biblio-authors"><a href="/biblio/author/1614">Nulens, G.</a>, &amp; <a href="/biblio/author/170">Luyten K.</a></span> (2007).&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class="biblio-title"><a href="/biblio/heritage_2_0">Heritage 2.0</a>. </span> (<span class="biblio_authors"><span id="14"><a href="/biblio/author/1920">Trant, Jennifer</a></span>, <span id="14"><a href="/biblio/author/1661">David Bearman</a></span></span>, Ed.).<u>International Cultural Heritage Informatics Meeting - ICHIM07: Proceedings. </u> <span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&amp;rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&amp;rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Fconference.archimuse.com&amp;rft.title=Heritage+2.0&amp;rft.date=2007&amp;rft.aulast=Nulens&amp;rft.aufirst=Gert&amp;rft.au=Luyten%2C+Kris&amp;rft.pub=Archives+%26+Museum+Informatics&amp;rft.place=Toronto%2C+Ontario%2C+Canada&amp;rft_id=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archimuse.com%2Fichim07%2Fpapers%2Fnulens%2Fnulens.html"></span><div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/biblio/heritage_2_0#comments ICHIM07 ICHIM devices heritage mobile multimedia personalised social ichim ichim07 http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/9591 Sun, 14 Oct 2007 22:18:12 +0000 jtrant 9591 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com
