With an intense schedule of ever-changing exhibitions in the Main Galleries and Front Room mixed with diverse public programs, ongoing educational programs, and hip social events, an App is the logical tool for today’s museum visitor. </p> <p>The CAM App is the first of its kind and functions on a local, regional, and national level. Utilizing the GPS of the iPhone, the CAM App provides users with a unique experience each time they launch the App. If launched within the museum, the interface is designed to act as an accessible tool that will help visitors navigate the aesthetic and conceptual landscape of contemporary art. With this App, users will be able to embark on a self-guided digital tour of CAM’s exhibitions currently on view. With each visit, the user will be able to move around the space, watch a video tour with architect Brad Cloepfil, listen to the Director speak about the history of the museum, and explore the mission and nature of CAM as a non-collecting institution with Chief Curator Dominic Molon. Continuing the self-guided tour, users can also listen as CAM curators introduce the work on view. As visitors explore the artworks, they will actually be able to see and hear the artist(s) talk about specific pieces featured in the current exhibition. </p> <p>Users launching the CAM App outside of the museum will be informed as to about how many miles they have to go before reaching the museum doors. Within the same screen an option exists that links users to an online map and directions to CAM from their current location. Those within a regional (50 mile) radius will also see an entire calendar including scrolling featured events and programs hosted by the museum year round. If a user is over 100 miles away, the App functions as an engaging well-designed mobile interface for online museum visitors that represents and enhances the museum’s brand nationally and internationally. Users are introduced to the CAM mission and programming via several avenues including: access to a shared blog with the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, the ability to connect with CAM’s social media platforms, and access to the <a href="http://camstl.org/channel">CAM Channel </a>which contains a wealth of educational and interpretative content focusing on the current exhibition. Watch artist interviews, listen to discussions with curators and educators, or view performances and public programs that occur in the museum’s Performance Space. </p> <p>The CAM App pulls its content from the CAM website (<a href="http://camstl.org">camstl.org</a>) which is controlled through Eero, a content management system (CMS) designed by <a href="http://www.toky.com">TOKY Branding + Design</a>.&nbsp;Features such as calendars, current exhibitions, general info, and hours are all pulled and updated automatically when updates occur to the main website via Eero. Features such as digital tours are organized and updated independently from an additional tool located within the same Eero CMS as the CAM website. The demonstration will include the CAM App and Eero.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cam-st.-louis/id477147137?ls=1&amp;mt=8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cam-st.-louis/id477147137?ls=1&amp;mt=8</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/aelmestad" class="username" title="View Alex&#039;s profile.">Alex Elmestad</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/cam_st_louis_app#comments MW2012 app art branding cam camstl CMS contemporary iphone museum st. louis toky http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15730 Wed, 16 Nov 2011 22:58:50 +0000 aelmestad 15730 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Kidding Around: Hands-on Digital Learning for Children and Families http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/kidding_around_hands_on_digital_learning_for <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2012 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> digital learning </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> museum </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> on-site </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> on-site </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> children </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> young people </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> teens </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> families </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Building on the success of the workshop at MW2010, three London museums are uniting to offer a half-day workshop on designing digital learning activities for children and families. The British Museum, Museum of London and Victoria &amp; Albert Museum all have on-site digital education centers that offer ambitious programs for young people.</p> <p>The nature of our collections and the unique interests and expertise of the teams running these programs means that they are incredibly diverse. The British Museum (Shelley Mannion) focuses on 7-9 year olds through augmented reality, animation, media production and web-based presentation tools. The Museum of London (Paul Clifford) covers a range of ages with photography, video production and mobile applications. The V&amp;A (Alex Flowers) focuses on Adobe design tools, gallery photography and collaborations with media artists.</p> <p>We propose a workshop that offers a jump start to museum educators or managers thinking about how to serve these audiences. Topics would include:</p> <ul> <li>What are kid-friendly objects? How to use them in digital learning?</li> <li>What are the profiles of young visitor types (e.g., very young children, elementary school age, pre-teens and teens? What does each group need?</li> <li>How to integrate technology effectively into successful models of gallery education?</li> <li>How to create a digital learning program on a budget?</li> <li>How to approach technology sponsors and write a proposal for funding</li> <li>What is the difference between gaming and game-like learning?</li> <li>How to use web-based and social media to connect with young audiences?</li> </ul> <p>The workshop will include discussion, quick hands-on activities selected from our vast repertoires of fun ways to engage children in the galleries, and a design activity where participants are asked to break up into small groups to brainstorm and describe a digital learning activity for an audience and institution of their choice.</p> <p>Particularly in the context of the recently announced MacArthur Foundation grants for museums and libraries in Digital Media and Learning, there is increased interested in on-site digital learning activities and best practice in serving young audiences through digital media.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Workshop - full or half day </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2012/workshops/kidding_around_hands_on_digital_learning_fo">Kidding Around: Hands-on Digital Learning for Children and Families</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.britishmuseum.org/learning/samsung_centre/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.britishmuseum.org/learning/samsung_centre/</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/smannion" class="username" title="View Shelley&#039;s profile.">Shelley Mannion</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/user/alexflowers" class="username" title="View Alex&#039;s profile.">Alex Flowers</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/kidding_around_hands_on_digital_learning_for#comments MW2012 children digital learning families museum on-site on-site teens young people http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15267 Sat, 01 Oct 2011 06:59:05 +0000 smannion 15267 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com The Use of Social Media in the Danish Museum Landscape http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/papers/the_use_of_social_media_in_the_danish_museum_l <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-paper-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div id="intro-paragraph"> <h2 class="Author">Nanna Holdgaard, IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark</h2> <h3 class="AbstractTitle">Abstract</h3> <p class="AbstractText">This paper examines Danish museums' use of social media on their own websites and on external sites like Facebook. The results of exploring 123 Danish museum websites and social media presences show that half of the Danish museums use social media - art museums being the most active among the Danish museums. Despite the fact that half of the Danish museums are on Facebook and write blogs, the majority of museums on a general level communicate with a low degree of user interaction, participation and engagement. This paper offers an analytical framework to describe and map the museology of the distributed museum as it unfolds across conceptual divides between physical and the virtual, the fixed and the mobile, and closed and open.</p> <p class="keywords">Keywords: museum, distributed, digital age, participatory, learning</p> </div><div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-paper-program-ref"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Program Item Reference:&nbsp;</div> <a href="/mw2011/programs/understanding_the_distributed_museum_a_creat">Understanding the Distributed Museum: A Creative Visualization of Contemporary Digital Practices </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div><p><a href="http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/papers/understanding_the_distributed_museum_mapping_t" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/papers/understanding_the_distributed_museum_mapping_t#comments MW2011 digital age distributed learning museum participatory http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/14710 Sat, 26 Mar 2011 18:58:41 +0000 ssbautista 14710 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Building LOD for cultural information resources in Japan http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/building_lod_for_cultural_information_resour <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-program-paper-backref"> <div class="field-label">Published Paper:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/papers/building_linked_data_for_cultural_information_">Building Linked Data For Cultural Information Resources In Japan</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> metadata </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> Linked Open Data </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> LOD </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> linked data </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> museum </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> sematic web </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Museum information in Japan is maintained distributedly and nonuniformly.
