With an intense schedule of ever-changing exhibitions in the Main Galleries and Front Room mixed with diverse public programs, ongoing educational programs, and hip social events, an App is the logical tool for today’s museum visitor. </p> <p>The CAM App is the first of its kind and functions on a local, regional, and national level. Utilizing the GPS of the iPhone, the CAM App provides users with a unique experience each time they launch the App. If launched within the museum, the interface is designed to act as an accessible tool that will help visitors navigate the aesthetic and conceptual landscape of contemporary art. With this App, users will be able to embark on a self-guided digital tour of CAM’s exhibitions currently on view. With each visit, the user will be able to move around the space, watch a video tour with architect Brad Cloepfil, listen to the Director speak about the history of the museum, and explore the mission and nature of CAM as a non-collecting institution with Chief Curator Dominic Molon. Continuing the self-guided tour, users can also listen as CAM curators introduce the work on view. As visitors explore the artworks, they will actually be able to see and hear the artist(s) talk about specific pieces featured in the current exhibition. </p> <p>Users launching the CAM App outside of the museum will be informed as to about how many miles they have to go before reaching the museum doors. Within the same screen an option exists that links users to an online map and directions to CAM from their current location. Those within a regional (50 mile) radius will also see an entire calendar including scrolling featured events and programs hosted by the museum year round. If a user is over 100 miles away, the App functions as an engaging well-designed mobile interface for online museum visitors that represents and enhances the museum’s brand nationally and internationally. Users are introduced to the CAM mission and programming via several avenues including: access to a shared blog with the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, the ability to connect with CAM’s social media platforms, and access to the <a href="http://camstl.org/channel">CAM Channel </a>which contains a wealth of educational and interpretative content focusing on the current exhibition. Watch artist interviews, listen to discussions with curators and educators, or view performances and public programs that occur in the museum’s Performance Space. </p> <p>The CAM App pulls its content from the CAM website (<a href="http://camstl.org">camstl.org</a>) which is controlled through Eero, a content management system (CMS) designed by <a href="http://www.toky.com">TOKY Branding + Design</a>.&nbsp;Features such as calendars, current exhibitions, general info, and hours are all pulled and updated automatically when updates occur to the main website via Eero. Features such as digital tours are organized and updated independently from an additional tool located within the same Eero CMS as the CAM website. The demonstration will include the CAM App and Eero.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cam-st.-louis/id477147137?ls=1&amp;mt=8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cam-st.-louis/id477147137?ls=1&amp;mt=8</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/aelmestad" class="username" title="View Alex&#039;s profile.">Alex Elmestad</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2012/programs/cam_st_louis_app#comments MW2012 app art branding cam camstl CMS contemporary iphone museum st. louis toky http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/15730 Wed, 16 Nov 2011 22:58:50 +0000 aelmestad 15730 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Virtual Museum and Small Museums: ViMuseo.fi Project http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/papers/virtual_museum_and_small_museums_vimuseofi_pro <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-paper-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div id="intro-paragraph"> <h2 class="Author">Magdalena Laine-Zamojska, University of Jyväskylä, Finland</h2> <p class="URL"><a href="http://vimuseo.fi">http://vimuseo.fi</a></p> <h4 class="AbstractTitle">Abstract</h4> <p class="AbstractText">New media are a huge opportunity and challenge for museums, especially for small institutions without digitized resources. However, the transition from legacy tour guides to the new media era, pose key challenges in adapting, managing and publishing content to multiple evolving platforms as well as fitting it to address the diverse target audience needs. There is no cross platform content management system with the ability to link the right content to different visitor profiles and interact with them real time.</p> <p>Based on years of research of cultural institutions’ exhibitions seeking a balance between the transmission of curatorial expertise and the ways different visitors interpret their intentions, we developed XENAGOS, a holistic knowledge management platform for dynamically adapting and publishing content to any media based on visitor profiles and real time feedback. The platform links existing collection management systems and tour-guide apps in a way that allows curators to store their knowledge in a semantic database, manage exhibit correlations to other exhibits, or exhibition space, or administer exhibits and tours relative to visitor preferences, educational level, time constraints, etc. As a result, XENAGOS allows cultural institutions to preserve investment in content despite the changes of technology and media platforms.</p> <p>During this session we will present to you use cases of actual deployments covering different peculiarities and needs of museums and how XENAGOS addressed them beyond expectations from tour guide initial adoption to production. Topics will include, content knowledge structuring, management and upkeep; cross platform publishing; smart phone provisioning for way-finding apps or 2-way dialog with visitors; and real time statistics gathering and reporting. All of the above highlight XENAGOS scalable foundation philosophy supporting a vision for transitioning the vast heritage of cultural institutions into a knowledge management and proliferation platform for the new media era.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Exhibitor Briefing - discuss your product. According to the National Board of Antiquities there are 163 professionally run museums, which are responsible for 326 places open to public<a href="../../../../../../../../mw2011/programs/virtual_museum_and_small_museums_vimuseofi_p#_ftn1">[1]</a>. However, there are around 600 smaller museums<a href="../../../../../../../../mw2011/programs/virtual_museum_and_small_museums_vimuseofi_p#_ftn2">[2]</a>, which cannot afford to digitize and make their collections accessible to a wider audience.<strong>&nbsp;</strong>The author’s preliminary study has shown that online accessibility and attractiveness of cultural heritage in these small, local Finnish museums is very limited. However, the local museums are very eager to use available Internet solutions to present their collections and communicate with their audience.</p> <p><strong>ViMuseo</strong> (Finnish <strong>Vi</strong>rtuaali<strong>Museo</strong> means “virtual museum“) is a project developed at the Department of Art and Culture Studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The main objectives of the research are: (1) to investigate the possibilities of new media in presenting cultural heritage in small museums; (2) to analyze the cooperation between the researcher, graphic designers and programmers; and (3) to construct the tool to create multimedia presentations. Participartory design and action research methods are used in this research.</p> <p>During the demonstration the basic functionalities of ViMuseo will be explained. <strong>ViMuseo</strong> is an online tool to create multimedia presentations, virtual exhibitions and projects. It is designed for the institutions without digitized resources, which want to be more active in the internet. The tool is a content management system, implemented as a Web application (Web CMS). It is developed with programmers and graphic designers. There are two version of the system: <a href="http://www.virtuaalimuseo.fi/04/" title="http://www.virtuaalimuseo.fi/04/">http://www.virtuaalimuseo.fi/04/</a> and <a href="http://vimuseo.fi/08" title="http://vimuseo.fi/08">http://vimuseo.fi/08</a></p> <p>The system and its interface are user friendly and its usage does not require any professional knowledge of programming. Users (the institutions’ representatives) may register and describe their institutions in a predefined way. They may add objects and use them to create virtual collections, exhibitions and projects. Each object may be constructed by providing textual description, adding Google maps, images, flash animations, movies, music files and downloadable files in most common formats. In this way, the user creates multimedia presentations, which can be used to create virtual collections, exhibitions and projects. A few examples of social tools will also be implemented and tested (comments, tags and Facebook Open Graph).</p> <p><strong>ViMuseo</strong> is a non-commercial project. At this moment, as a part of the author’s doctoral research, it serves only to investigate possibilities of new media and their implementation in local institutions. In 2010 the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture has constituted the working group to investigate the situation of the Finnish regional museums and the possible development tools. If many problems are solved, ViMuseo.fi can be potentially developed as a working system serving local museums.</p> <p>The research is supported by the grants from the Department of Art and Cultural Studies, University of Jyväskylä, Finland. This project would not be possible without the help of the Jyväskylä University Museum<a href="../../../../../../../../mw2011/programs/virtual_museum_and_small_museums_vimuseofi_p#_ftn3">[3]</a>, which provides all the necessary materials and support.</p> <p><a href="../../../../../../../../mw2011/programs/virtual_museum_and_small_museums_vimuseofi_p#_ftnref">[1]</a> The National Board of Antiquities, Museotilasto 2008 / Finnish Museum Statistics 2008 <a href="http://www.museotilasto.fi/user_files/Museotilasto%202008/Museotilasto_2008_painoon_MALLI.pdf">http://www.museotilasto.fi/user_files/Museotilasto...</a> (13/12/2010)</p> <p><a href="../../../../../../../../mw2011/programs/virtual_museum_and_small_museums_vimuseofi_p#_ftnref">[2]</a> The Finnish Museums Association <a href="http://www.museot.fi/museoala">http://www.museot.fi/museoala</a> (13/12/2010)</p> <p><a href="../../../../../../../../mw2011/programs/virtual_museum_and_small_museums_vimuseofi_p#_ftnref">[3]</a> Jyväskylä University Museum <a href="https://www.jyu.fi/erillis/museo/en">https://www.jyu.fi/erillis/museo/en</a> (13/12/2010)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-type"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Type:&nbsp;</div> Demonstration - show your project </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-backreference-event"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/demonstrations/demonstrations_iii">Demonstrations III</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-progam-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Site:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.virtuaalimuseo.fi/04" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" title="Read more about [title]">http://www.virtuaalimuseo.fi/04</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-program-authors"> <div class="field-label">Authors:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/user/maglaine" class="username" title="View Magdalena&#039;s profile.">Magdalena Laine-Zamojska</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="og_rss_groups"></div> http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/virtual_museum_and_small_museums_vimuseofi_0#comments MW2011 CMS digital heritage Finland local museums small museum virtual museum http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/crss/node/13124 Mon, 13 Dec 2010 08:32:14 +0000 maglaine 13124 at http://www.museumsandtheweb.com Installing the Collaborative Calendar http://www.museumsandtheweb.com/mw2011/programs/installing_the_collaborative_calendar <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-conference"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MW2011 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-program-paper-backref"> <div class="field-label">Published Paper:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/mw2011/papers/installing_the_collaborative_calendar">Installing the Collaborative Calendar </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-program-keywords"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> Calendar </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> BPOC </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> drupal </div> <div class="field-item even"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> CMS </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline"> Keywords:&nbsp;</div> open source </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-program-abstract"> <div class="field-label">Abstract:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Like most cultural institution Web sites, the sites from BPOC member institutions have a significant emphasis on events – exhibitions, lectures, classes, tours, performances, etc. Commercial calendar products are often not flexible enough to meet the specific needs of the cultural heritage field, forcing many museums to make do with inadequate calendaring systems at great expense.
