Re: Digital Trends in Museums 2013 presentation

June 6, 2013 - 12:01pm

Hi Robert, Nick

I don't know if this directly relates to the points being made here, but it reminded me how struck I was by Lizzy Jongma's talk about the Rijksmuseum online at a recent Glam wiki event, and how the virtual/digital experience of art can in some cases surpass the physical experience in the physical space. She makes this point in the video of her talk available at https://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM-WIKI_2013/Schedule#Fri-Jongma from about 13mins in. Lizzy admits that when she saw one of the paintings in real life for the first time when the museum opened recently, she found she was [...]

Dear Robert,

Many thanks for your response. As ever, you raise a very useful and interesting point!

To me, the greatest strength of digital content is also one of its most significant challenges - which is its essential non-linearity. The power of the hyperlink opens up the capability for everything to connect to everything else. This unlocks tremendous opportunities to create new relationships between bodies of knowledge, but it creates an immense challenge in creating coherent experiences for users. [...]

Re: Digital Trends in Museums 2013 presentation

June 6, 2013 - 10:32am

To me as a curator, and I think to several others of my colleagues the central question remains, how can one create a real work of art analoguous to the wonders of a book in a previous age using a combination of digital resources and textual interpretation. The book was essentially a text based medium and the coffee-table book relied on images of beautiful things. The digital media enable the really smart and illuminating cross-relationships of different digital things and text as well. With the possibility of user engagement. That makes the museum a much more central to the new [...]

Re: Flickr Pro as a DAM, with Flickr API CMS integration [UNCLASSIFIED]

June 5, 2013 - 1:46pm

In effect I already use Flickr as my primary means of sharing my own
personal collection of vintage images and have also hacked a few
things with the API, especially with Flickr Commons. That has given me
enough experience to echo much of the above - it's feasible but not
really advisable as a primary store. That said it has certainly has
proven itself as a place to share images in its own right, and via the
API on your own site. [...]

Yes but that's just nonsense, isn't it?

What else is Flickr for if not content distribution? (Flickr Commons doubly so).

Re: Flickr Pro as a DAM, with Flickr API CMS integration

June 5, 2013 - 12:44pm

Hi Tony

We did something very experimental for an exhibition which approached this:

www.wellcomecollection.org/things

Which uses Flickr as a backend for 300+ object images and data in the 'calendar of things' via the API

I wrote a paper about it for Electronic Visualisation and the Arts, which is here:

http://ewic.bcs.org/upload/pdf/ewic_ev11_s2paper3.pdf

There were some sticky moments with authentication but by and large it wasn't bad. [...]

Seconded: I wouldn't rely on this for anything 'primary'. As a sort of content delivery network for delivering surrogate images this could be quite a good / cheap rouse actually -- but I'd need few strong beverages before I considered Flickr (whether Pro or not) for anything archival. [...]

Re: Flickr Pro as a DAM, with Flickr API CMS integration [UNCLASSIFIED]

June 5, 2013 - 12:38pm

Hi Tony,

We have experimented with this a little. We used machine tags to generate a unique reference for each image which can be related back to our catalogue. We haven't implemented the results but it does work and the benefit for us is displaying the full set of images of a piece (i.e a box of photos) not catalogued to item level. [...]

Re: Audio Recording Devices

June 5, 2013 - 11:45am

I can endorse Zoom. Just bought a recording kit for oral history on the go,
recording events, and in the field. A Zoom H1 plus Audio Technica omni
directional condenser lavalier microphone. Can also be used to record audio
when film recording with a hotshoe adaptor for your camera. Will get some
45mm windshields for outdoors for it. Cost very reasonable (c. £110 for the
lot). [...]

I would second the Zoom products.  Have used them for oral histories in the past, sound quality is great. Also check out iBeaken for QR codes system that could facilitate your trail audio for iphones. Sent from Yahoo! Mail on Android

Re: Audio Recording Devices

June 5, 2013 - 10:34am

Hi Sarah

For Android devices I would recommend TapeMachine Recorder (it may or may
not exist in iTunes Store). I have used this on a variety of phones for as
a cheap substitute for an industry standard digital microphone (such as as
the DRM85) and have found it to work brilliantly. There is a nice live
waveform when recording (to monitor clipping and background noise) and has
some basic editing features. If, however, the audio is to be recorded
outdoors and requires the clarity of speech without noise pollution then a
good quality digital mic (such as the aforementioned DRM85) [...]
