Re: Responsive web design straw poll [Scanned]
July 18, 2013 - 2:16pmAt Southbank Centre our site is completely responsive.
However this is not without issue. There is a feeling, which needs validating, that the site is too image led and does not serve desktops particularly well.
Nevertheless we have seen a massive increase in mobile transactions since making the move in to a responsive site in January. [...]

Re: Responsive web design straw poll [Scanned]
July 18, 2013 - 1:34pmHey John
Everything we do for clients now is responsive: there's very little point in not. (this is all Wordpress btw, not that it makes any difference..).
We've also gone back and retrofitted a couple of sites, which is a bit more painful but mostly doable.
I'd say anyone in category 3 and definitely anyone in category 4 should probably think quite hard :-) [...]

Re: Responsive web design straw poll [Scanned]
July 18, 2013 - 1:29pmHI We've already got most of the pages (well, ones that sit in Drupal, less the online collection, ticketing, shop...) responsive, well, optimised for some mobile devices. There's still more we can do ;) www.tate.org.uk Tijana ________________________________________ From: Museums Computer Group [MCG@JISCMAIL.AC.UK] on behalf of John Benfield [john.benfield@RSC.ORG.UK] Sent: 18 July 2013 18:08 To: MCG@JISCMAIL.AC.UK Subject: Responsive web design straw poll [Scanned] Hi I was just wondering who in the museum/heritage sector had considered responsive web design (RWD) for their site, so a little straw poll: 1) Already created a RWD site 2) In the middle or redeveloping using RWD [...]

Responsive web design straw poll [Scanned]
July 18, 2013 - 1:08pmHi
I was just wondering who in the museum/heritage sector had considered responsive web design (RWD) for their site, so a little straw poll:
1) Already created a RWD site
2) In the middle or redeveloping using RWD
3) Considering RWD within next 2 years
4) Not going to do anything for at least next 2 years [...]

July 18, 2013 - 8:00amDear MCG colleagues,
Further to my previous message about the Digital Benchmarking Tool for
Museums, I wanted to share with you the news that Te Papa museum in New
Zealand has formally adopted the Digital Benchmarks tool as part of the
planning and monitoring of their digital development in their 'Statement

NMDC news survey
July 17, 2013 - 2:54pmDear all,
Just a note to everyone who reads NMDCnews - the monthly policy roundup from the National Museum Directors' Council (clue: it's the very long one with the grey colour scheme - here's the latest issue: http://www.nationalmuseums.org.uk/news/newsletters/?item=69). We know it's forwarded and read far more widely than among those who actually subscribe, and we're running a short survey to see what's useful or not from the perspective of many different museum workers. [...]

Re: Digital Trends in Museums 2013 presentation
July 17, 2013 - 7:28amThanks Nick - this is a quick and easy tool to use and provides a useful snapshot of where an organisation is at any given time.
I guess it would be hard to express with this tool but I would be interested to know, for instance, the degree of autonomy of organisations or departments in developing digital projects. [...]

Re: Digital Trends in Museums 2013 presentation
July 17, 2013 - 6:34amDear Perry (and MCG colleagues),
Apologies for the prolonged delay in coming back to you about this, but I just wanted to let you know that the full Excel version of the free 'Digital Benchmarks for Museums' tool is now up on Collections Link at http://www.collectionslink.org.uk/discover/sustaining-digital/1608-digital-benchmarks-for-the-culture-sector.
To set this in context - the Collections Trust has been working on a project called ENUMERATE (www.enumerate.eu), which is about creating statistical intelligence about digitisation and digital preservation in Europe's GLAM sector. As part of the survey work, we found that a consistent picture was emerging about how cultural organisations are integrating digital [...]

Re: Digitizing Exhibition Catalogs
July 17, 2013 - 6:30amDear Sara,
This sounds like you should join the US based ImageMuse Yahoo group for advice on the digitisation and copyright aspects, you could also get advice from the UK equivalent, AHFAP if you wished.
*Assuming* you do not have an in-house photography team, ImageMuse would be able to advise on US based freelancers. [...]

Digitizing Exhibition Catalogs
July 16, 2013 - 3:56pmApologies for the cross-posting.
Hi Everyone,
An idea of digitizing all of our exhibition catalogs has been thrown on the table. Has anyone done this before? What were the copyright/logistical challenges? The ideal would be to put the catalogs online eventually. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Re: Examples of changed collections policies
July 16, 2013 - 9:40amCopy material has always been part of our collecting policy. Depending on the nature (and or quality) of the copy it will either be accessioned as any other item or added to our History Files, with the method of acquisition being recoded as 'copy'.
We actually get quite a lot of material that way, including the gentleman who came in last week with a couple of hundred images he had downloaded onto his phone that he wished to give to us, and just wouldn't believe me when I said that about 95% of them were our own downloaded from our [...]

Re: Examples of changed collections policies
July 16, 2013 - 8:24amI don't have an answer, but what a fascinating question! I get the
feeling that very few have changed but I look forward to being proved
wrong.
Linked with this it's also fascinating to see the rise of what I would
loosely describe as 'private collections' - from individual collectors
through to the likes of local history societies - being shared on
sites like Flickr and Historypin and thereby being made public and
accessible alongside the more established collections. To give those
people the opportunity to have their objects, or digital versions of
them, accessioned into a major collection would [...]

July 16, 2013 - 8:11amWe are in the process of implementing such a change and I would be happy
to chat about such things (although my take is digital and not per se
collections policy).

Subject: Examples of changed collections policies
Does anyone have any examples of how collections policies have been
changed as a result of UGC or crowdsourcing activities? I.e. members of
the public have allowed a museum/archive to scan old photos, letters,
etc, and display these online or accession the scans, and [...]
