Re: Video conference/conferencing

And replying for myself - first, insert the usual 'not everyone wants
to use Google Hangouts' statement, whether over privacy, 'all the eggs
in one basket' concerns, their tax stance or whatever...

Secondly, a plea to consider the quality of the experience for the
online viewer! For example, the Institute for Historical Research sets
up a chat and a slide window alongside the video of the speaker and a
twitter hashtag, and they regularly post to say which slide is on the
screen in the room (if it's not visible on the video feed). It sounds
like a lot of [...]

Re: Video conference/conferencing

Wow, thanks for the quickest replies to me ever on the list, I'll definitely explore all those suggestions. The conference I'm looking at 'broadcasting' is this year's museum photography conference (www.ahfap.org.uk), we have many members all over the UK who are finding it difficult to make the trek in these straightened times so why not bring the conference to them? We at least will have a decent selection of cameras between us, but liveview feed from a Hasselblad might be too much data for the web! Hangout!

Utterly brilliant. Screen sharing. Presentations. And you can record
the end result to YouTube too...

Re: Video conference/conferencing

Try a Google Hangout. I have successfully had a 6-way conference call using
it as Skype was getting very flakey. It has a few well-integrated elements
like screen-sharing, ability to take screenshots etc as well as sharing
files, links and text chat. You can, I believe although not tried it,
record a Hangout. Everyone needs a gmail account of course and the way into
it seems to change on a weekly basis but once you're in it's great fun. [...]

New app builder

May 22, 2013 - 2:52pm

Hi

I was introduced to this list be a friend. She suggested I post after we
discussed a new app building platform we have created that could benefit
museums.

Weboo, my startup in London, has built a product in late beta called
Fliplet that can be used by non-technical people to build and maintain iPad
apps. [...]

Using visitors' personal narratives

May 22, 2013 - 9:29am

Hello all,

I’m currently doing some research on museums’ collection and use of visitors’ personal narratives (digital stories, oral history and the like), as I’m wondering if there is a point at which museums (and their staff) reach a kind of saturation point with such content.

By this I mean, museums are (I think rightly) committed to giving their broad constituencies a voice, but what happens to that ‘content’ as the online museum presence becomes more cluttered, or, in time, is 'tidied up'? I’m noticing some archives that used to be available online and that I’ve used previously are suddenly [...]

Matthew, Jon,

also there's now a number of "social-networky" tools like
http://lectrio.com/ that might be a good option for the BM if they have
some internal resources to handle the configuration.

If it was me, I'd consider looking at other kinds of systems - which might include open source - used for similar kinds of activity, but which are not branded as VLEs. So consider some of the e-research systems used in the science and digital heritage sectors, and also education sector CPD tools like those developed by http://www.irisconnect.co.uk/ [...]

VLEs

May 22, 2013 - 3:49am

Hi,

The BM is investigating using a VLE for a training programme for international museum professionals.
We would like to talk to companies with experience of setting these up and managing them for museums or other cultural orgs.
If you are one, or can recommend one - can you get in touch by email - on or off list? [...]

Re: Adwords / online advertising for heritage

May 21, 2013 - 5:20am

The Gloucestershire Museums Group ran a Facebook ads campaign last year to support the FB page of their tourism marketing website www.gloucestershirerevealed.co.uk. We had a tiny budget but a hook of a competition to attract people. We put £10 a day in a month. We found the ability to target our demographic useful.

Would your institution like an evaluation of your mobile guide - free (really)?

May 20, 2013 - 11:33am

Dear All,

I'm the professor of human-computer interaction at the University of York and one of my research interests is the evaluation of mobile guides.

With one of my PhD students I've developed a scale to measure visitors' experiences in museums and another scale to measure their experience with mobile museum guides - each of these scales is approximately 20 questions to be answered on a 1 - 5 scale, so very quick for visitors to answer. We hope they might be useful to museum folk who need a quick way of measuring visitor experiences (we are not suggesting that [...]
