Evaluating (OSS) CMSes
April 3, 2013 - 11:45amHi all
We're looking for someone to do some research for us, evaluating a short list of (mostly open source) CMSes against a new site we're working on. Can anyone recommend an agency or freelancer who might suitable and/or interested in this work and receiving an RFP?
Thanks
Danny

I assume the fact that people are engaging with the detail of getting to workable CRM means they agree with the broad vision, so yes, let's look towards the big win. [...]

Re: New blog on Collections Link - Create Once, Publish Everywhere & ResearchSpace
April 3, 2013 - 9:58amDear all,
Echoing the points made earlier this afternoon - CIDOC-CRM is a conceptual reference model. To be useful, it has to be instantiated, adopted, integrated, supported, trained and used.
Up to now, the power of CIDOC-CRM has been locked away in some of the most hideously complicated spider diagrams I have ever seen, which I freely confess have defeated me whenever I have come close to them (although I do suspect that they may be the inspiration behind the plot of Inception...) I'd give a big +1 to that point. I've tried a number of times along with several colleagues to get a good sense of what CIDOC-CRM is all about, but it tends to prove elusive. Similar to Mia's experience, this has been with some very experienced people in their field, so it's hard not to think that [...]

Once there is a growing number of simple examples the community "could"
begin to agree on how it is used, or more likely how different
requirements are expressed. These simple then, peer reviewed, examples
could be the basis of further use. [...]

Re: New blog on Collections Link - Create Once, Publish Everywhere & ResearchSpace
April 3, 2013 - 8:32amThe problem is that technologists always talk about fitting data into a common set of data fields. This is what most aggregators do and of course important information is squeezed out in this process.
The challenge for harmonising data, even data from completely different specialisms, is not to try and fit it into a common set of data fields and/or limit the data that you can represent. It is to find a common set of generalisations about the data. It is these generalisations that enable data to be represented in such a way that means completely different datasets can be [...]

Re: Online community platforms
April 3, 2013 - 8:14amHi Rosie,
Ok perhaps this would be over kill. but if you wanted a bit more
functionality you could look at using the software that runs Wikipedia,
http://www.mediawiki.org/ it's free, open source and has the flexibility
to allow you to provide quite a range of functionalities.
Just a thought.

that enable you to do this, such as ning, socialgo, grou.ps and

Re: Online community platforms
April 3, 2013 - 7:41amHi Rose
I'd say avoid anything hosted (Ning is a great example of a platform that fell apart when they changed their terms of service), or anything bespoke. The obvious one that springs to mind is BuddyPress - http://buddypress.org/ which is a nice combination of highly tested, open source, and also available for you to host yourself / edit / own. [...]

Re: Online community platforms
April 3, 2013 - 7:34amHi Rosie
We offer a bespoke online community platform which has all the features of a social media tool like Facebook and can connect to these tools as well.
Have a look at http://e-learningstudios.com/bespoke/learning-networks for the functions and features. At the bottom there are examples of what we have produced, including a http://www.smile-vet.eu/index.php/en/learning-network which was developed for the museum community for digital conversion. [...]

Re: New blog on Collections Link - Create Once, Publish Everywhere & ResearchSpace
April 2, 2013 - 4:17pmHi Nick,
I'm giving a presentation on this topic at next month's national Museums Australia conference in Canberra: "Create Once, Publish Everywhere - Approaches for re-using collection information online".
There are many challenges, especially with the large volumes of tombstone data created before staff were planning to provide public access to content. However, it is important to look at collections data and consider how it could be re-used in different ways, for different audiences with different levels of interest. This can help guide how the content is created. [...]
