Re: visual timeline ideas

OKFN Labs produced a fantastic timeline that works with Google Spreadsheet:
http://timeliner.okfnlabs.org/ I'm not sure of the uptake, and I don't know
about development plans, but its pretty useful for quick time-bound data
vis.

Mike - the first example I gave was my own very 'lazy' default
implementation of Simile, the second one from Historypin uses TimelineJS,
your favourite. Enough said?!

But both being based on a data driven API it should be simple to convert
one to the other, which is something I've been meaning to do for my Flickr
Commons one. [...]

I'd agree about MIT - although you can render it really nicely provided you aren't tempted to be lazy and use the default.

I like this one best myself: http://timeline.verite.co/

I had thought that Exhibit 3.0 was being developed, but looking at the
site it seems there have not been any changes since Feb 2012, so perhaps
you are right. Shame though as it is quite flexible.

I have to say that my impression is that Simile/Timeline/Exhibit is rather
end-of-life, unless anyone knows otherwise?

I have a bit of a timeline obsession, so may be worth looking at my Pinboard links:

https://pinboard.in/search/u:dmje?query=timeline

Guess that some of these will be 404/out of date but might be some useful bits in there

Hi,

Also if you are able to look at using a Simile
based Timeline
you may also want to look at
their Exhibit widget which
allows for a greater range of interaction options.

Linda,

Take a look at Easy timeline or Timeline 3D. A very professional result that has been used by the likes of the BBC.

I have used this myself and it is simple to use. Defiantly worth a look.

Hi Linda,

The new Wellcome Library timeline is definitely worth a look, and the tool
has been open-sourced on Github.

http://wellcomelibrary.org/using-the-library/subject-guides/genetics/makers
-of-modern-genetics/genetics-timeline/

https://github.com/wellcomelibrary/timeline

One of our developers has been experimenting with it on one project and
it's looking pretty good so far.

Best,
David

Database backup

April 16, 2013 - 4:31am

Hi All
I am the new Computer Officer for the Sedgwick Museum, here in
Cambridge, and I am interested to know how other museums with large
databases back up their data, and the policies in place to ensure that
the collections database is safe and secure.

Our Collections Managements System is Mobydoc's SNBASE , which we use
because it is specifically designed for natural history collections. [...]

Re: visual timeline ideas

April 16, 2013 - 4:12am

Hi

I'd first ask two questions before I can give a more detailed answer (and
in the process make the important division between the source data and the
presentation):

- what information do you have and how do you have it stored? From your
initial post it sounds like it may be new content and so you could place it
anywhere, but if you do have it already stored somewhere that could be
worth exploring rather than having to rework it. As a side question, who
will be contributing content and will it be a finite dataset or ongoing? [...]

Re: DAM systems integration with CMS databases

April 16, 2013 - 3:57am

Hi Tony,
Just to say we have Mimsy XG and AssetIndex+ as our collections database and digital asset system respectively.
For collection assets we use OAI to transfer data from our Mimsy database, while our initial setup consists of an export program from our DAMS and a separate import (Media Upload) to Mimsy to get the appropriate image files exported and linked to our collection data. For the moment this gives us more control over transferring data around without risking the integrity of our collections database although at some point in the longer term we will probably look at something [...]

Dear All,
Where is a good place to start exploring examples of great visual timelines? We have used so far a Google spreadsheet adapted via Brian Croxall's tutorial: http://briancroxall.net/TimelineTutorial/TimelineTutorial.html - for an internal application only. A new colleague (Gemma) suggests you MCGers would be the ideal people to ask. Any contributions therefore gratefully received.

Re: DAM systems integration with CMS databases

April 15, 2013 - 12:17pm

Hi Tony

Just a touch base to say we are grappling with the details of this also.

I am sure that the reference Nick has given will help you (and us)
immensely - with asking the right questions in particular - it certainly
reflects many issues we're looking at.
We are an Adlib (CMS) and Extensis Portfolio (DAM) 'shop' and also have
an initial implementation of a Collections Information Integration
Middleware (CIIM - http://www.k-int.com/products/ciim). Our front end
services (http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/explorer/) are currently
reliant on seperate service indexes (which Dominic alluded to) based on
ElasticSearch. [...]

Hi Tony,

Many thanks for the question, and I'm glad to hear you've got someone coming to OpenCulture!

I wanted to make sure that you are aware of SPECTRUM Digital Asset Management, which we put out for consultation in February. The aim of the publication is to provide a guide to the integration of Digital Asset Management into Collections Management workflows and Collections Management Systems (based on SPECTRUM, natch). Re: DAM systems integration with CMS databases

April 15, 2013 - 10:25am

Alternatively we are in the process of creating a real time connection between CMS and DAM. In the past we have also replicated data but we now tend to avoid this duplication.

We have connected a CMS (Musims Index+) Soap Service to the DAM through its API so that we can do real time searches of object metadata through the DAM UI system and also link assets to object data - currently being tested! In some environments a separate indexing server would also be needed. [...]

Re: CIDOC CRM Semantic Search

April 15, 2013 - 8:27am

Dear Mike,

Yes, I will put a voice over on to explain what is going on - perhaps tonight.

The facets are easy once the data is mapped to the CRM. It is the mapping that allows both functionality and flexibility. We can change the relationships in the search sentence to expand them and have a more detailed relationship search or we can condense further for simple searches. The facets also just reflect whatever relationships we choose from the CRM. [...]
