Re: Adwords / online advertising for heritage
May 20, 2013 - 7:46amHi Mike,
Katy O'Brien has been doing some freelance in this area at Kew, and she's been fantastic - katyobrien13@gmail.com
Katy's working at Kew full-time until the end of July, but available afterwards. If the timing doesn't wok - and depending on how BIG the campaign is - Katy may be interested in working on this outside of Kew hours. [...]

Adwords / online advertising for heritage
May 20, 2013 - 6:08amHi all
Do you have any recommendations for people who have experience managing AdWords / Facebook / other online advertising campaigns? Ideally they'd have worked with heritage doing this stuff (and would therefore understand the kind of budget / lack of budget we have to deal with).
I've got a super-nice client who wants help with their summer campaign and we don't have time / expertise enough to help. [...]

New user interface for the BM's collection online
May 16, 2013 - 12:40pmHi MCGers,
We have today launched a new user interface for the BM's collection online at http://www.britishmuseum.org/collection
The page design has been completely overhauled, from initial search to object result; the design incorporates larger images and text, and the advanced search functionality has been re-developed to make it easier for visitors to understand and use - instead of having to follow a multi-step process starting with a search for terms that we use to categorise the collection, you can just start typing and an autocomplete facility will bring back likely matches. Re: Digital Strategy
May 16, 2013 - 12:08pmThanks Nick, I had a look through this in Jan when you announced it and it looks like it will be very useful. Will there be something for people to work on other than assessing their organisation against the range statements? I probably haven't quite understood how it will work. Look forward to seeing the Excel version. [...]

Re: Digital Strategy
May 16, 2013 - 10:49amHi Martin,
Many thanks for this. This is exactly the rationale that led us to create the Digital Benchmarks tool as a self-assessment process using an Excel spreadsheet. The idea is that smaller museums can work their way though it (either on their own or with support from an MDO, consultant or friend from a local museums) and it will give them a visual idea of where they are today and where they might go next (which I believe is the basis of all good strategy!). Of course, we won't mind if larger museums want to do so too! [...]

Re: Digital Strategy
May 16, 2013 - 10:23amSome useful references have come up via this thread, but I haven't seen anything that takes account of the issues of or arises out of work with smaller or lower capacity museums or organisations. Am I missing something obvious?
The main issues we have identified in our work relate not so much to 'knowing the best way to go about it', but more barriers like lack of expertise / confidence among staff members to initiate the data gathering, sustain the discussions, facilitate clear decision-making and so on. Most larger organisations know they need to create a digital strategy and will [...]

Re: New blog on Collections Link - Create Once, Publish Everywhere & ResearchSpace
May 16, 2013 - 9:24amRecently I came across this post on the design issues around
dynamically-generated pages and re-using content which pretty neatly
summarises some of the issues: 'Using content in more than one place
gives you value for money, but you still have to spend money in the
first place. You need to design and create the content with each
representation in mind.'

Ideas from MuseumNext 2013
May 16, 2013 - 5:54amDear All,
MuseumNext was this week and there were lots of great sessions. I've written up a very brief review of some of these on the V&A Digital Media blog. Highlights include Seb Chan's fabulous data-driven, release-driven approach at the Cooper Hewitt and some background on the awesome new Rijksmuseum website and its bold approach to prioritise the art being as close to the visitor as possible above navigation and interpretation. Re: Digital Strategy
May 15, 2013 - 8:00amHI Natalie,
the MCG's last Museums on the Web conference was themed around being
'strategically digital', so you might find some of the event reports
and slides useful:

The MCG also supported a panel on the subject at the last Museums
Association conference, I've written some of it up
http://openobjects.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/go-digital-at-museums-association-2012.html
Finally, the international Museums and the Web conference has hosted
some great papers on the realities of writing and implementing digital
strategies including: [...]

Re: Digital Strategy
May 15, 2013 - 5:42amHi Natalie
We are just finishing off a piece of work in this area for SHARE Museums East, following on from some research by Collections Trust. It is targeted specifically at lower capacity museums, helping them
(a) understand the value of auditing and planning digital activity, and
(b) work out how to manage the process, to engender the discussion and decision-making required to make it an effective process.
I can let you have more details if you like and/or talk through the issues in your context.
Best wishes
Martin

Or, the Social Media Policy Tool: http://socialmedia.policytool.net/
Hat tip to Mike Ellis who links to these from his site: http://heritageweb.co.uk/ (Managing and growing a cultural heritage web presence)

Re: Digital Strategy
May 14, 2013 - 9:48amHello,
Mike ellis wrote a good primer http://www.electronicmuseum.org.uk/book/
If you looking at what to include I would suggest ALL touch-points that any
audience segment may us that includes a digital element. This may involve
directions to your museum from online maps, displays on-site, reviews, wifi
provision.... to name a few!
Good luck

Digital Strategy
May 14, 2013 - 9:32amI am supporting some museums currently putting together their first
digital strategy covering social media, websites, e-newsletters and
engaging with external websites. I am looking for examples of digital
strategies from other organisations, or resources particularly useful
for museums developing these documents. Many thanks in advance!

Re: Data Asset Management Systems for images query
May 14, 2013 - 9:18amHi,
When we run our Managing digital media collections workshop we use the
open-source http://omeka.org/ which is a pretty good tool to test and use
for showing your team. It can scale and may be good as 'the solution' or at
least as a starter.
