Propose an MP seminar for MA Conference and Exhibition
May 1, 2013 - 7:08amHi,
I thought you might be interested in a call for proposals that has just gone out for MP workshops at the Museums Association Conference & Exhibition, which takes place in Liverpool on 11-12 November.
http://www.museumsassociation.org/news/01052013-propose-an-mp-workshop
In previous years we've had a really good amount of digital presentations in the MP programme, and these also tend to pull in a large audience of visitors and delegates. [...]

Re: Knowledge Exchange - How widespread are RP objects in UK collections?
May 1, 2013 - 5:14amThank you for this
I agree, very cool! I find science and natural history collections are leading the way when it comes to methodologies for the digitization of objects and specimen. Perhaps they are less weighed down by an auratic understanding of objects?
However we are looking specifically for physical reproductions; objects that have been printed on 3D printers from digital files.
Sorry if my initial message was not one hundred percent clear on this. [...]

Re: Web design needed
May 1, 2013 - 4:34amHi Michael, I can recommend Mickey and Mallory, they're based here in Manchester but work closely with the London Museum, LSE and also University of London. They've done quite a bit for Jisc and also us here at Mimas: http://www.mickeyandmallory.com/ Good creatives, get the domain issues and data challenges, very flexible (within reason) and excellent project management. Good luck! Web design needed
April 30, 2013 - 12:26pmHi there friends
The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology (University College London) is developing a new public web experience that will showcase the magic of our world-class, but somewhat hidden, collection. The website is intended to be a rich multimedia environment perhaps with some video, interactive maps, a timeline and will certainly feature 3D digital models of key objects. We are scoping it all out now. [...]

Re: Any advice on image metadata?
April 30, 2013 - 10:55amPerhaps my experience is not relevant.
I was dealing with images, photos, prints and watercolours.
ModesCompact is used by 900 museums.

I always worry about the words "got to" ;) !
Why ModesCompact and what "appropriate fields"?
This may be obvious to your good self, but for those who are just starting out on this journey, the benefit of your experience would be appreciated.
Many Thanks,

Re: Too Fragile? Using Advanced Computing Technology to Form New Textual Infrastructures and Add Scholarly Value
April 30, 2013 - 8:25amMariann,
Well, you should definitely head across to the TEI site [1] and learn
about this well-established framework for developing interoperable
encoded textual resources.
It wold also be worth talking to the English departments of Newcastle
and Lancaster Universities, both of which have explored the encoding of
primary resources. Since you've asked the MCG list, I should also
mention the Wordsworth Trust, which has TEI-encoded manuscripts and
letters, sometimes in frightening detail. :-) [...]

You've go to put it in a database like ModesCompact with appropriate fields.

Re: Knowledge Exchange - How widespread are RP objects in UK collections?
April 30, 2013 - 7:03amHi Sarah,
British Geological Survey are not strictly a museum, but they have curators, manage vast objects collections, and colossal datasets. They also work very closely with the geological museum sector.
They're are doing some interesting work in this area:

Re: Any advice on image metadata?
April 30, 2013 - 6:44amDo you mean adding it as embedded metadata? You could use exiftool. It should be easy to write a script to add all your object identifiers from a list too.
There are a number of GUI options - Irfanview thumbnails, Microsoft Pro-photo tools, EXIFtool GUI. But I think with these I think you have to add identifiers one by one. [...]

Re: Any advice on image metadata?
April 30, 2013 - 6:37amHi,
Metadata can be scrubbed, but this should not detract of the benefits that
such as process can bring. Rights Management is one aspect but there are
others such as object surrogate details (object number, name), object
history, associations, subjects and technical information (such as quality,
manipulation) can be embedded as well. These aspects can prove to be useful
for the future use of the image either in research or display. [...]
