Re: Recording audio

April 22, 2013 - 4:00am

Hi Linda,

We've done some simple recording using a Zoom recorder and a mic with a
push to talk button, there's an auto track function on the recorder so that
each contribution ends up on it's own track - it was a fairly simple way of
doing things

Re: Recording audio

April 21, 2013 - 3:53am

Hi Linda

I have done a lot of audio recording of oral history etc. For simple 'snaphot' recording the onboard Voice Recorder app is fine, or something like BlueFire, but for more sophisticated features, editing and processing Garageband for iOS is excellent.

Dragon Dictation is a good choice for speech-to-text, or you could try YouTube's machine transcription service. [...]

Recording audio

April 20, 2013 - 2:43am

Dear All

Hoping to pick you collective brains...

Has anyone recorded (as an audio file) any short oral histories / visitors comments using an iPad or similar?

Can anyone recommend any software or app to convert audio to text?

We want to set up a mobile audio booth in the gallery but it's not something I've done before so any pointers would be most gratefully received. [...]

Digital culture research project (CATH) – seedfunding available

April 19, 2013 - 10:25am

Dear MCGers,

The University of Birmingham and University of Leicester are launching a scheme to create 3-way partnerships between their academics, cultural organisations and commercial companies.

As part of the scheme (funded by the AHRC) 16 different partnerships will each receive £4K in seed-funding to develop new digital prototypes.

The CATH launch is in Birmingham on 15 May (http://cathlaunch.eventbrite.com/), which will be an opportunity for cultural organisations and companies to meet with academics from the two universities, and to begin to form some of the potential partnerships. [...]

Dear all,

I write on behalf of the Europeana Inside project. Our second newsletter is out!

Re: Visiting museums via your phone

April 18, 2013 - 5:14pm

I was an employee of the BBC's online department just over 10 years ago and I remember those people well! They did prevail for a bit when political pressure got our budgets slashed.

We had deja vu thanks to those types via the Brighton Argus when we released the Brighton Museums app! But there were some nice rebuttals from other readers thankfully. [...]

Re: Visiting museums via your phone

April 18, 2013 - 4:43pm

Ten years ago the same people were probably up in arms that tax-payers'
money was funding the BBC to put stuff on the web, but now it's that
digital technology that has allowed those same people to share their
ignorance and narrow-mindedness rather than just bore themselves with it!

Re: visual timeline ideas

April 18, 2013 - 3:30pm

And another one I just stumbled across - DPLA have a nice one that's not
just presentational but acts as an alternative interface into their
collections (or rather their content providers' collections).
e.g. http://dp.la/timeline?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=daguerre#/?year=1839

What makes for a good museum website?

April 18, 2013 - 12:23pm

Dear MCGers,

there seem to be a number of conversations about 'what's the point of
museum websites?' and 'what do you want from a museum website?' at the
moment and I thought it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts. (And that
does mean *you* - there are over 1000 of you on this list, it'd be lovely
to hear some new voices chipping in too :) [...]

I'm a bit late to the discussion, but some people like Tiki-Toki (
http://www.tiki-toki.com/) or Neatline's timelines + maps combination (
http://neatline.org/).

A lot depends on the final audience and on whether you've got an existing
set of content you'd like to re-use rather than re-creating within new
software. For example, Viewshare now works with content published as JSON
but that's only useful if you can easily publish data from spreadsheets or
collections systems in that format. [...]

Re: Lovely new tech with lots of museum possibilities [Scanned]

April 16, 2013 - 8:24am

Drooling! I wonder what the captured image quality is like though?

I can immediately see an application for this where people bring in their
old photos and document which get 'instantly' digitised and then they can
drag and drop them into collections, onto virtual maps, timelines etc and
with a hard or soft keyboard add titles, captions, notes - digitisation and
data capture all in one seamless activity. [...]

Re: visual timeline ideas

April 16, 2013 - 7:39am

Great to see such interest in interactive visual timelines here! This is the subject of my PhD which I am undertaking at the Royal College of Art, supervised by Stephen Boyd Davis and in collaboration with System Simulation.

We are working on interactive timelines, which we are considering not only as a means for presenting data, but also as a tool for examining and discovering patterns and relationships through time. We feel that there could be a lot more gained from exploring collections in visual timelines than is possible with current interactive timelines. [...]
