iPhone: Next Generation Museum Device?

Chris Alexander, San Jose Museum of Art, USA
http://www.sjmusart.org/iphone

Since November 2005 the San Jose Museum of Art has been offering it's visitors iPods as audio guides to selected exhibitions and permanent collection works. The museum has been using the Notes-Only mode (aka "Museum Mode") and has been faced with it's many limitations, such as text only display, small text size, navigation issues, etc. With the release of the iPhone and the iPod Touch these issues are of no concern now. The new devices offer a much more flexible platform for developing tours and audio guides by using the Safari Mobile browser included on each.

This demonstration will focus on a prototype tour that the San Jose Museum of Art has developed using the iPhone and iPod Touch. The tour is constructed by creating small webpages which are viewable on either device. Through the device interface you can offer visitors text, images, audio, video and more. With the user friendly touch screen interface, visitors no longer have to worry about scroll wheel navigation. Just touch and go!
